This is my fear too, and not just teams of Rangers standing. In Carlisle over the last two weeks I was 'entertained' by a client with all 8 european semi finals in the evenings. For the majority of the time I'd rather have watched paint dry. I was informed after Man U beat Barca by an english colleague that the tension of the possibility of an all english final more than made up for the lack of action on the pitch, quite.

At the end of the day it comes down to whether football is a results business first or an entertainment business, which gives most football fans a nice hypocritical viewpoint- when its your team the result matters not the entertainment, but when its not your team the result becomes irrelevant so we look for entertainment. Ultimately for the good of the sport I think we have to look at it as an entertainment business though.

More simularities between the finals.72 Rangers beat a previous final opponent in the semi final as was Fiorentina in this years semi. Russian opponents in the final. 5years after Celtic played in the final in Lisbon, Rangers played in Spain, 5 years after Celtic played in Sevilla, Rangers reach another final. 71/72 was a year both Partick Thistle and Stoke Cityboth won their League Cups ,now could Queen of the South and Cardiff do it again for the smaller clubs.

Rangers managers in 1972 and 2008 were both 'old heads' who had returned to the club after several years away - Willie Waddell left as a player in 1957 and returned in 1969. Walter Smith departed as manager in 1998 and returned in 2007. Their assistants were both being groomed for the top job and both came to Rangers attention after shock results against Rangers in the Scottish Cup - Jock Wallace with victory at Berwick and Ally McCoist after a 3-3 draw with St Johnstone.

Most ominous of all, a year after Rangers win in the ECWC Kilmarnock were relegated!

I would suspect that such tension makes up a huge part of the actual entertainment for most people. I, for one, can't watch a match without wanting one side to win. If you don't have that, then it can become a long night.

I think we can safely dismiss the misty-eyed tosh about the good old days of the game being played 'the right way'. I, for one, remember almost every European Cup Final finishing 1-0 when I was a kid.

The confident noises from New Douglas Park would suggest this one is not as unlikely as it sounds, I'm afraid. Kilmarnock have been a shambles this season and can't afford to repeat it next year - but then I think you know that.

I thought Colin Stein was top scorer with 5 goals?

Quite right. My apologies, I was getting confused with the 1967 ECWC when Rangers reached the final and the top scorers were George McLean & Dave Smith with two apiece.

Can you provide more details please? There's no Central League for these years on your website.

Sorry, but I should have emphasised that it was the Central Junior League between 1934 and 1936 and won by Clydebank and Blantyre Victoria respectively.

Thanks. Do you have a link to the league tables?

Looking at your Blantyre Victoria page I see that they played at Juvenile level in 1900-01, but this is not recorded as a separate level elsewhere other than by age. What is the story here?

What about THIS season? Pollok have played ten games in May alone and considering they also played six in April, one of which was on April 30th that makes eleven matches in 31 days. I understand they also have a game on Monday! And, depending on the outcome of their match v Girvan today, might still have the West of Scotland Cup Final to play.

The number of games appears to have affected them in reverse to the way it did Rangers. Pollok won their league but so far have fallen short in various cups.
