Hibs v Ayr United & St Mirren Anglo Scottish Cup

David/anyone

You don't happen to have the Hibs teams for the aforementioned games? There doesn't appear to be anything in rothmans for the preliminary games.

Sorry, Bobby, I don't. Just the scores which I presume you already have. If not let me know and I'll dig them out.

From the Hibs programmes of early 1977/78

First leg, Wednesday 10 August 1977
Hibs 2 (Smith, Scott), Ayr United 1 (McCall)
Hibs: McDonald, McNamara, Schaedler, Brazil, Stewart, Blackley, Duncan, Bremner, Scott, MacLeod, Smith.

Second leg, Monday 22 August
Ayr United 2 (McCall, McCulloch), Hibs 2 (Bremner, Smith)
Hibs: McDonald, McNamara, Schaedler, Brazil, Stewart, Blackley, Smith, Bremner, Rae (Duncan), MacLeod, Scott.

I'm afraid I don't have the relevant progs from 1979 for the St Mirren games.

If it's any help, the Falkirk Herald gives the altogether too rounded figures of 2000 at Somerset Pk & 2500 at Brockville

I have a figure of 13,100 for The Airdrie V Nottingham Forest game I presume that figure came from Rothmans, I'll have to dig out all the old Rothmans books from a cabin trunk under the staircase amongst vynall LPs etc, ran out of room in my programme cupboard years ago.

The 71/2 Rothmans actually gives a crowd of 20,000 for Airdrie v Forest - a good round number! But no crowd given for the Ballymena match.

A few others:

Clyde v Celtic in 1978, both legs were 10,000 according to Paul Lunney's Complete Record of Celtic.

Raith v Morton in 1978, John Litster's book gives the crowds as 2045 in the first leg, and 3000 in the return.

First off, thanks to all concerned for figures. Some points:

I'm happy to take estimates where nothing else exists and in the case of Ayr & Falkirk the figures strike me as reasonable. Same with the Morton - Raith return.

For Airdrie v Forest the 20,000 seems way high but then again there were some big crowds for the Scottish legs in the early days of this competition and Airdrie also claimed 20,000 v Man City. Never seen the 13,100 before and would like to know the source if possible.

Clyde-Celtic strikes me as too high a figure for the return leg - though I don't doubt it was given in the press.

There is a general problem with attendances for this competition as it appears some but by no means all were given to the SFL. I wonder if there was some kind of organising committee set up by all the leagues concerned (English, Scottish, Northern Irish, ROI) to which the figures were submitted and that body's records have been lost or forogtten over the years.

Thanks for those. I should add that other than the matches I listed above I have attendance figures for all other matches in the Texaco/Anglo-Scottish Cup so if there are any you are looking for, post the match details here.

I've been sent a copy of an old match report which gives the figure as 13,800 but there is also reference to 13,100 a couple of days later.

The penalty rule was new at the time and both sides took five each which means that penalty taking continued even AFTER it was clear Airdrie had won as the penalty tally was 5-2 in their favour.

The final result INCLUDED the penalties as if they were part of the normal game, the report giving it as Airdrie 7 Forest 4 (1-1 90 mins, 2-2 aet) and and aggregate of 9-6!

Of course a few weeks later came the confusion in Lisbon when penalties were taken at the end of the Sporting-Rangers game with Rangers 'losing' when they had in fact won on away goals.
