Defunct Glasgow Junior clubs

Post by docbillp » Mon Mar 02, 2009 11:34 pm

A number of years ago, I read that someone was going to publish a history of defunct Glasgow junior clubs. It was envisaged that the 2 Waverleys - Bridgeton and Denniston, Strathclyde, Shawfield, Parkhead among others would be the focus. Is there such a publication? And has anyone any info on where Strathclyde Juniors used to play and the year of their demise. Thanks.

Best place for Junior publications is Stewart Davidson's Non-League site. He may also know when some of these clubs folded. I think Strathclyde vanished some time after WW2 but before 1960.

Brian McColls list has Strathclyde juniors from 1888 to 1965, (previously called Beechwood XI 1888-1894) and they played at Springfield Park.

Will give you the other teams details.

I have a notion that Ian Anderson, author of the Bathgate Thistle history and "Caledonia Dreaming" made mention of a history of defunct Glasgow Junior clubs, however I cannot find my copy of "Caledonia Dreaming" so cannot confirm this. I am certainly not aware of anything being published on these clubs, although as already mentioned Stewart Davidson would be the best source of information.

I wonder if they're one of those clubs that folded and made a brief comeback. Brian is right, they were around in 1964-65, appearing in the Junior Cup that season. But they don't appear to have entered the Junior Cup in 1960-61 or 61-62, returning in 62-63.

Strathclyde were certainly about in 62-63 season as I played against them for Rutherglen Glencairn at Southcroft Park scoring a goal in a 5-2 victory.

According to Bob Crampsey writing in the Evening Times several years ago in answer to a question 'What caused Strathclyde to close down'. He replied ' As I understand it , the Strathies , who did not own their own ground were informed in May 1965 that they would not have (New) Springfield Park for the following season.

Despite the short notice they were very anxious to keep going and asked the S.J.F.A. for permission to play at East Kilbride Juniors ground in 1965-66, thelatter having disbanded. The S.J.F.A. were only agreeable on the condition that Strathclyde would find a Glasgow ground for season 1966-67 and so the east end club , unable to meet this condition, went out of existence.

That would square with them appearing in the Wee Red Book for 1965-66 but not 1966-67. It still leaves unanswered the reasons for non-participation in the Junior Cup in the early 1960s.

I will check it out the next time I am in the Mitchell Library as I do a lot of research in the East End newspapers that were available at the time.

Starthclyde played in the SJC every season in the 60s up to and including 64/65. Mind you, they were usually knocked out early on !

So they did and so they were. No idea what possessed me to suggest otherwise.
