Highest Defeat before Stirling 20-0 Selkirk

Post by HibeeJibee » Mon Jun 15, 2009 1:58 pm

Stirling 20-0 Selkirk was played in December 1984... Does anyone know the last time a club lost by 21 goals in a Scottish Senior game, or the last time 21 goals were scored in a Scottish Senior game? I.e. "it was the biggest loss/highest scoring game since [inset match here]"? Cheers.

The last 21-goal game I have prior to this was a Scottish Cup Prelimenary Round 1 match on 5 September 1891 when Johnstone trounced Greenock Abstainers 20-1.
Perhaps Greenock abstained from defending?

Can`t find Carfin Shamrock losing to Northern 22-1 in a Scottish Cup tie. They DID beat Northern 4-2 in a 3rd Round tie in 1889-90 after a protested game for which admittedly I don`t have a score(could it have been 2-1 not 22-1 to Northern?). I have Renton beating Kirkintilloch 16-0 not 15-0 & Cowalirs beating Victoria 21-0 not 21-1. The side that Vale of Leven beat 16-0 was Milngavie not Milngavie Thistle.

The Northern - Carfin Shamrock match in 1889 WAS 2-1 in a game which was ended early because of fans fighting on the pitch. The referee and several Northern players were injured.

For 15-goal margins there was also Glasgow Perthshire 2 Wishaw Thistle 17 in the firs preliminary round of the Scottish Cup on Sep 3rd 1892. Stevenston Thistle beat Girvan 16-0 in the second round and Arbroath won 16-0 away at Strathmore Athletic in the third round.

Bloody casuals :D

Who were 'Northern' anyway?

They were a Glasgow club, Springburn IIRC (I'm away at the moment and don't have access to all my records). They were briefly Scottish League members in the 1890s.

All of the record books and internet sites listing big wins have the Northern v Carfin Shamrock game as 22-1. Is this just a case of the plagarism of an error over 100 years? Or could Nothern have been awarded 20 goals if Carfin were at fault for the pitch invasion?

Yes. Many internet sites simply cut and paste from elsewhere. So if there is an error in the original source it will be repeated. In any case not ALL sites or books give the incorrect score. John Byrne's 'Scottish Cup 1873-1986' has the correct score of 2-1 as does Soccerbase (which I think took its figures from Byrne's book). All contemporary reports give 2-1.

No, because the SFA ordered the match to be replayed at Ibrox with Carfin Shamrock emerging victorious. In any case the usual procedure if not ordering a replay was to award the tie. The number of goals in such cases was immaterial.
