'Duff" Hibs players

Sunday Mail from 11th May 1947 has the following Hibs team for a 2-0 away at Third Lanark:

Kerr, Duff, Shaw, Howie, Aird, Kean, Combe, Leslie Johnstone, Stirling, Turnbull, Ormond.

Duff is confusing me - I've looked at Litsters disk, Emms Book, Hibs histories and there isn't a player that seems to fit the bill.

Anyone able to offer any suggestions? I'll double check the sunday post next time I'm in Glasgow.

Having spent a considerable amount of time recently trawling papers for wartime line-ups, its worth pointing out that the Sunday Post (and occasionally the Sunday Mail, which didn't always carry line-ups) regularly seems to include previously unknown names in team line-ups. On investigation these usually prove to be another player, often of a similar sounding name. I put it down to a problem with inexperienced copy takers taking down names incorrectly from reporters telephoning in from the press box. Its not really a problem with regional weeklies, for obvious reasons. I would suggest you try to look at the football edition of one of the two Edinburgh evenings and also check the selected line-ups in the Friday papers.

The mystery number 2 for Hibernian on 10th May 1947 was Jock Govan.

Thanks soccer for the pointers, that is very helpful as I'm just about to move onto the war period.

Alan, thanks for clearing that up.

This match was actually at Hampden where Thirds played for all of 1946-47 and part of 1947-48 and took place after the Great Britain v Rest of Europe match played the same day.
