Penalty Misses
Penalty Misses
Was reading up on the Stranraer v Bo'ness SQC final 1937-38 and it mentions Bo'ness missing three first half penalties, keeper saved them all, surely that must be some sort of record ?, can't recall that happening in recent times.
I seem to remember an Ipswich V Man United game circa 1980 where Ipswich won 6-0 and missed three penalties

Walter Scott of Grimsby Town was the first goalkeeper to save three penalties in asingle game; he performed this heroic feat in 1909 against Burnley.
Other goalkeepers to achieve this feat include Manchester United's Gary Bailey, who saved three penalties against Ipswich Town at Portman Road in 1980 but still conceded six goals from open play, and Huddersfield Town's Matt Glennon, who saved three spot-kicks in a League game against Crewe Alexandra in 2007.
It's the Hope I can't stand
Penalty misses
As an add on to the little side stories on goalkeepers I remember sometime in the 80s during a Liverpool V Luton match at Anfield, the Luton goalie Jake Findlay was injured before half time and Mal Donaghy the full back replaced him between the sticks, then after a half time team reshuffle went back outfield and was replaced by the other full back Kirk Stephens, as he took up his position in goal at the Kop end ,the tannoy anounced the change and within seconds the Kop erupted into , One Shakin Stevens, There's Only One Shakin Stevens. Pure brilliant. No one seemed to notice at the time or since that in the coarse of that game Liverpool did infact face, inturn, a goalkeeper from Scotland, Northern Ireland and then England in the one match.

Never stand next to Shakin` Stevens @ the urinals. The referee ordered Kilmarnock to retake the same penalty 6 times vs. Partick Thistle in a Southern League game on 27th October 1945 @ Firhill. Jimmy Steadward saved the 7th effort & the Jags won 5-3. Perhaps David knows who the unlucky Killie player was. Celtic failed to score from 3 spot kicks vs. East Fife @ Bayview Division One 17th February 1973(Murdoch, Hood & Dalglish); the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Happy Hogmanay and a prosperous 2010 to everyone.
