Scottish Juniors - Players No.6 award - early 1970s

Post by stewart » Tue Mar 09, 2010 8:14 pm

Has anyone heard of what appears to be a Player of the Year award from the early 1970s, sponsored by Players No.6 cigarettes ?
This was awarded by the Scottish Junior FA.
Was it a one-off award ?

I have a vague recollection of this award being in existence round about 1971 but nothing more. I presume the winner was a left-half?

More likely a joint award to that stalwart full back pairing Benson & Hedges.

That's it. Doubts, joints, let the punning commence.

I bet the winner's star sign was Cancer.

What a great idea - young player award sponsored by tobacco.'Yer a great wee player son. Here's a year's supply o tabs, suck in that lovely invigorating smog.' Next year - the Buckfast Young Player of the Year Award for the best performance of keepie-uppie in a disused shop doorway lined with cardboard.

Players No 6 seemingly awarded the following for the Scottish Junior Cup in 70/71 season

Winners £100 and 'gold' trophy
Runners up £50
Losing semi finalists £25

Top three goalscoring clubs were awarded £50, £25 and £12 respectively.
One condition on the prize winners seems to be that the cash had to be spent on sports equipment.

I think the Club Capstans were regular winners, although I'm sure Lambert and Butler were joint winners at Love Street one season.

Player's Number Six awards

Early 70s seems a bit late to me. Hadn't Jim Baxter, the last Player to wear number six not retired by then?

Oh Dear! double negative in there. Should have read; "Had JB not retired by then?"

Just found this in the Evening Times 10 December 1970;

"Cumbernauld United have won the Players No. 6 Award for the highest goalscorers in the Central League. Their prize for scoring 18 goals in November is 2000 cigarette coupons to be used to buy sporting equipment. United's tally was 2 more than rivals Cambuslang Rangers"
