THE Old Firm

Post by Insertnamehere » Fri Apr 02, 2010 7:19 am

While reading old match reports etc ive noticed on a good few occassions that the Old Firm were mentionedc as The Rangers and The Celtic, were they actually called this and if so when did it end or was it just the style of reporting?

That said I have seen a lining for a hat presented to Arthurlie players to celebrate their victory over THE Celtic.

Thanks as always
Robert

Not official names (though some were, e.g The Wednesday). It was commonplace in the 19th century for every team to be referred to with the definite article, not just the OF. It still is for many clubs and though of course OF fans have long since dropped 'The' in favour of the demotic 'ra.'
