Percy Whipp

Post by Scottish » Fri Jul 16, 2010 10:21 am

Neil Kaufman is looking for information on this player and writes:

"Percival 'Percy' Leonard WHIPP was born in Glasgow in the 1880s but played all his football outside of Scotland with Ton Pentre in Wales, Clapton Orient, Sunderland in June 1922, Leeds United joined in November 1922, back to Clapton Orient in 1927, Brentford 1929, Swindon Town May 1930, Bath City August 1931 and finally with Worcester City in 1932.

I thought being born in Scotland he may have died in Scotland"

Some additional information.

In his book on pre-war players, Michael Joyce gives a date and place of birth as 28/6/1897, Glasgow. According to Scotlandspeople there was no one of that name registered in that year. However there was a Percy (not Percival) Whipp registered as a birth in Glasgow in 1893. That is the only Percy or Percival Whipp whose birth was registered anywhere in Scotland 1880-1900.

In addition to the clubs Neil mentions, Michael Joyce has his first club as West London Old Boys

There is no record of a death registered in Scotland 1933-2000.

The earlier (1893) date is almost certainly correct: he claimed to be 17 at the time of the 1911 census (with a Gorbals birthplace), when employed as a baker in Fulham. And FreeBMD shows a Percy L Whipp getting married in Fulham in the final quarter of 1913 (unlikely for a 16-year-old).

Michael Joyce supplies the following information:

"In the draft of the third edition of Football League Players' Records 1888-1939, which I am currently working on, Percy Whipp's date of birth had been amended to 28/06/1893 and Percival amended to Percy.

I have just carried out some research in the England and Wales death records, and find that he died at Ealing in quarter 4 of 1962, aged 69, which confirms the 1893 birth date."

Ah, another Brentford boy. He died in Acton, on 18 October 1962.

Percy Whipp and my grandmother were cousins he was actually born in 1905 a year before my grandmother and he was the youngest of 6 children. He was the only one of the children born in Scotland as his parents moved around a lot as his father was a sea captain. His father died at sea when Percy was only 1.5 years old. The remaining family moved to Fulham which is why he then only played for English teams.

I have also been looking at Percy Whipp's playing career because of the reference to his signing for Worcester City FC in 1932.

I am looking at the careers of the +60 Scots who played for the club. However, I currently have a ? against Percy Whipp's name. There is a reference on the Swindon Town website that he joined Worcester City from Bath City in 1932. However, he is not shown in the Official History of Worcester City FC as signing or making any appearances. If by chance you have any information on the end of his career that might help me that would be great.
