Non-Scottish Internationalists with Scottish clubs
Non-Scottish Internationalists with Scottish clubs
One of our members is trying to compile a definitive list of players capped for their country while with Scottish clubs. We're talking non-Scots here and it's not as simple as you might think. For instance neither Inverness CT nor Livingston have definitive records for recent players like Richard Hastings (Canada), David Alleyne (Barbados) and Marvin Andrews (Trinidad & Tobago). See here for further details.
Remember, the player has to have been CAPPED while with a Scottish club. Which rules out for example the likes of Franck Sauzee whose caps all came before he moved to Scotland.

I'm sure De La Cruz did. See When the Ecuadorians go up written at the time of the last World Cup.
Maybe that's no such a bad thing.scottish wrote:Last time round there were six SPL players at the World Cup. How many this time round? Prso perhaps and that's about it.
One the one hand, the non old firm teams are returning to Scottish players.
On the other, it means the old firm are only attracting foreign diddies rather than half decent foreigners.

First Foreign player capped?
Its going back a while here, but I am sure the first real "foreign" player capped while at a Scottish club was the Dane Carl Hansen, who played with Rangers in the early 1920s. Another pre WW2 one which springs to mind is Mohammed Latif.

Thanks to a small mental block I managed to miss out two more Northern Irish caps, Iain Jenkins and Darren Patterson, from my United list. Mind you, if you saw them play then you'd understand why I'd want to to suppress the memories!
Regarding Finn Døssing, perhaps surprisingly he was never capped for Denmark at all. United's other 60's Scandinavians, Mogens Berg (Denmark) and Finn Seemann (Norway) were both picked up caps before and after, but not during, their Tannadice careers. The Scandinavian leagues were amateur at that time, and I think players playing professionally abroad weren't usually considered for the national teams.
I checked Carl Hansen's stats in a list of Danish internationals and while I think's it true to say he was the first continental import to Scottish football all his caps were before coming to Ibrox - same story as above I expect.
