Fife Select V Sunderland

Post by Rob R » Thu Apr 12, 2012 9:53 am

I have the match programme for the Michael Colliery Disaster Fund Match between a Fife Select And Sunderland at East End Park , Dated Monday 26th October 1967 but 26th October 1967 wasnt a Monday .I've looked in the Times & Herald from that week, the week before and after and I cant find a mention of this match. Was it cancelled or played some other time?

Dunfermline's programme for the game against Kilmarnock on 30th September 1968 states the game was played on Monday 25th September

Fife Select:
McGann (East Fife), W. Callaghan (Dunfermline), Rolland (Cowdenbeath), Barry (Dunfermline), Gilchrist (East Fife), Porterfield (Raith Rovers), Edwards (Dunfermline), Burns (Cowdenbeath), Dewar (East Fife), Murphy (Raith Rovers), Wallace (Raith Rovers).
Don't seem to have the Sunderland team for some reason, although I believe it included a Scottish contingent of Baxter, Kinnell, Herd, Mulhall and Martin.

The Fife Select side for this game lined up Billy McGann (East Fife); Willie Callaghan (Dunfermline), Andy Rolland (Cowdenbeath); Roy Barry (Dunfermline), Ian Gilchrist (East Fife), Ian Porterfield (Raith Rovers); Alex Edwards (Dunfermline), Jim Burns (Cowdenbeath), George Dewar (East Fife), Jim Murphy (Raith Rovers) & Gordon Wallace (Raith Rovers). Subs were Bobby Reid (Raith Rovers) and Denis Jack (Cowdenbeath). Jack came on for Murphy but I don`t know if Reid came off the bench. George Farm(Dunfermline) was the Select`s coach. Ian Porterfield was transferred to Sunderland soon after this game & scored their winning goal in the 1973 English Cup Final and subsequently succeeded A.C.Ferguson in the Pittodrie manager`s chair in 1990 with not quite as much success. Alex Edwards was an amatuer internationalist @ 16.
Sunderland` side was: Forster, Irwin, Parke,Todd, Kinnell, Baxter, Hughes, Suggett, Martin, Heslop, Gauden. Subs: Harvey, Tueart. Don`t have their scorers or substitute appearances(if any) I`m afraid. Despite making his Sunderland debut aged 15 years 185 days in 1964, Derek Forster only made another 29 league appearances in the 12 years as a professional.
