Crowd Averages all-time and post-1961

For top division average home gates covering the periods 1961-1975, 1975-1998 and 1998-2012 in greater detail please see HERE

Average league attendances all divisions both all-time and from 1961-2012 (period in which all clubs are covered by official figures). Note: I have no data on three clubs - Dykehead, Galston, Helensburgh and information on other 1920s Third Division clubs and 19th century Second Division ones is far from complete - for example there are fifty ‘missing’ crowds for Motherwell and if these were ever identified and included, would be sure to reduce the Fir Park club’s average. Another example is that Alloa’s average represents that of all 1515 matches played 1921-2012 while Clackmannan played only 61 matches in the 1920s and their average is based on just 24 of these, making it bigger than their local rivals.

Nevertheless these figures are as accurate as possible. The first thing that strikes me is the difference between the OF averages and their crowds today. Remember too that the astonishing OF gates of the past two decades or so are included in these figures and that prior to the 1990s their averages would have been even lower than they appear here.

All Divisions 1961-2012

Comparing these figures with the ones above we find that only four clubs have averaged more over the past 51 seasons than when compared with their all-time figures. The Old Firm plus Dundee United and Dunfermline Athletic. The reason for the latter pair’s improvement is that they spent the bulk of their time pre-1961 in the Second Division

Looking at the old Second Division 1961-1975, it’s not surprising that the best crowds came from those clubs which spent the least time in the division. Nine clubs spent the entire period at this level -, Albion Rovers, Alloa, Berwick, Brechin, Forfar, Montrose, Queen’s Park, Stenhousemuir and Stranraer. In addition both Clydebank (nine seasons) and Meadowbank (one) played only at this level. Cowdenbeath, East Stirling and Hamilton all missed just one season and Queen of the South two. Dumbarton and East Fife were absent for three years and Arbroath and Stirling Albion for four.

At the other end Dunfermline, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Partick Thistle and St Johnstone were in this division for just one season. Airdrie, Falkirk and Third Lanark were there for two, Clyde for three and Morton four.

That leaves just three clubs that couldn’t be sure whether they belonged to the top or bottom division. St Mirren spent five seasons at this level, Ayr United seven and Raith Rovers nine.

5871 St Johnstone
5722 Morton
4256 Partick Thistle
4219 Dunfermline Athletic
3639 Kilmarnock

2665 Motherwell
2234 Airdrieonians
2193 Ayr United

Unlike the old Second Division the 1st Division 1975-2012 has both an up and down escalator, even if the upwards one seems to jam from time to time. Consequently no club has played anywhere near the full 37 seasons of the period in this division. The nearest to a permanent fixture is Hamilton Accies with 26 seasons. Others who have spent more time than not at this level are Ayr United and Raith Rovers (24), Airdrieonians, Falkirk and Morton (23), Clyde (22), Partick Thistle (21), Clydebank and St Johnstone (20) and Queen of the South (18). Intriguingly, Dundee - almost a permanent fixture in the old First Division (only two seasons missing 1893-1975) have spent nearly half their time (17 seasons) since then at this level.

There have been occasional visitors from both the top and bottom ends of the league. One season from Dundee United, two by Hibs and four Hearts and Motherwell, clubs usually at a higher level. And one from Albion Rovers, two from Berwick, Cowdenbeath and East Stirling and three from Stranraer.

Where this division has lived up to its original intention has been to allow quite long periods for clubs previously associated almost exclusively with the bottom flight. Brechin and Forfar have both spent eight years in the 1st and Alloa and Montrose both seven.

7290 Hibernian
7283 Dundee United
6645 Hearts
4304 Dundee
3761 Dunfermline Athletic
3438 St Mirren
2932 Falkirk
2871 Kilmarnock
2848 St Johnstone
2813 Partick Thistle
2777 Motherwell
2570 Ross County
2416 Inverness CT
2211 Raith Rovers
2205 Ayr United
2098 Morton
1867 Airdrieonians
1808 Queen of the South
1713 Hamilton Academical
1599 Gretna
1520 Airdrie United
1349 Livingston/Meadowbank
1308 East Fife
1289 Stirling Albion
1283 Arbroath
1207 Clyde
1193 Berwick Rangers
1192 Clydebank
1192 Albion Rovers
1138 Dumbarton
1062 Montrose
1010 Alloa Athletic
987 Queen’s Park
958 Forfar Athletic
913 East Stirlingshire
858 Cowdenbeath
830 Stranraer
739 Brechin City

Clydebank and Albion Rovers have identical figures but I have placed the Bankies ahead of Rovers on the grounds that they spent twenty years at this level compared to Rovers’ one.

If you include 1st division play-offs then Peterhead (who have never actually played a full season) have an average of 2594.

The 2nd division was the lowest level until 1994 when the 3rd division was instituted so the same rules apply as the 1st regarding permanent membership. Stenhousemuir have competed the most often (31 seasons) with Stranraer (29), Berwick (26), Alloa Athletic (25), Brechin & Cowdenbeath (24), Forfar & Stirling Albion (23), Arbroath (22), East Fife 21 and Queen’s Park (20) all having spent a considerable time in this division.

There have been short spells both from clubs relegated - Kilmarnock (1), Falkirk & St Johnstone (3) - and clubs passing through on their way up - Gretna (1), Inverness CT & Ross County (2). Perhaps most surprising is that two teams that used to alternate between divisions when there were only two, Ayr United and Raith Rovers, have both spent ten seasons at this level. Almost equally surprising is to find Dunfermline and Morton with six seasons.

Elgin City have never played at this level but have one 2nd division play-off with an attendance of 1248

Here’s the depressing reality about the 3rd division. You can almost guarantee half its membership despite the fact that finishing fourth of ten and 36th in the whole league structure (equivalent to second or third last 1961-1994) gives a team a shot at promotion.

One team - East Stirlingshire - has spent the entire eighteen seasons of this division’s existence playing at this level. Another - Elgin City - has spent every year of their league history (twelve seasons) rooted to the bottom division. Albion Rovers and Montrose have been out of it for just one year and Queen’s Park for three.

OTOH Morton and Hamilton have slummed it at this level for just a single season. The Highland pair introduced in 1994 gave crowds a substantial boost until they gained promotion and so did Livingston when they moved to their current home. That can be seen in the sharp drop in the averages after the top four.

ALL CLUBS ALL DIVISIONS 1961-2012

First thing to note is the comparatively small gap between the OF and their nearest challengers. In this era clubs in the top flight had two visits to OF ground each season while the big two visited each other once. However, capacities at several other grounds were well above those of today. Well over twenty clubs had capacities in excess of that of today's Pittodrie which is the biggest stadium outside of Glasgow. Note too the gap after Third Lanark which signifies those clubs which spent the majority of their time in the top flight and the others. Also the gap after East Fife which signifies the difference between those clubs with occasional top division spells and the rest. The eleven clubs immediately below East Fife managed a total of just two top division seasons between them.

Away average attendances Division One 1961-1975. The first thirteen places are filled by the usual suspects. Of top flight regulars only Falkirk are below where they would expect to be. Note the big difference in this era between the OF and their nearest rivals as the big two often pulled in gates of over 30,000 and occasionally 40,000 on their travels, pushing their away averages up to record levels.

Into the Premier Divisions aways 1975-1998. With all clubs guaranteed four away OF trips, coupled with declining capacities the gap narrows between the OF and the rest. There were five seasons in which there were no Edinburgh derbies. Otherwise the gap would have been narrower still. The fifteen clubs which spent at least one season in the top division in all three eras fill fifteen of the first sixteen places here.

On to aways in the SPL era, 1998-2012. On the face of it the most egalitarian ever with a difference of just over 4,500 between top and bottom and the Old Firm knocked off top spot. Back to our old friend, lies, damned lies and statistics. We now have two grounds which dwarf all others. While Celtic and Rangers visit each other twice, every other club gets either three or four visits to the OF each season which is why in some seasons Celtic actually have the lowest away average - they are the only club whose biggest away gate is some 10,000 behind everyone else's.

Here are the average aways for the old Second Division 1961-1975. As you'd expect the higher figures are from the clubs which spent the least time - and hence were the most successful - there. The top ten here spent only 21 seasons at this level between them. Also interesting is the narrowness of the band compared to the top flight. Just over two and half times the average between first and last compared to over four times for Division One in the same period. Note too that no matter how poor the home gates were, no club averaged below 1,000 on their travels.
