St Mirren v Manchester City Friendly

Post by Steve Bell » Mon Jul 02, 2012 7:08 am

Both the London Hearts and RSSSF websites list a match being played between St Mirren and Manchester City on Wednesday, 6th August 1980. They both give the result as 3-4 in favour of City. There is nothing on the St Mirren Programme Archive website. Does anyone have any further details on this match?

Yes that must be the answer. Strange though that both sites have the same error. RSSSF gives the result as 3-2 whereas it was actually 3-4 as you correctly say.

Clyde v WBA (0-0) was played on 1st August 1980 (Friday) although both sites have this as being 3rd August (Sunday). Quite a coincidence again that they should repeat the same mistake.

Both sites are missing the following results:

Saturday 26th July 1980 -
Arbroath 1 Swindon Town 1
Dunfermline Athletic 1 Preston North End 3
St Johnstone 2 Oxford United 1

Monday 28th July 1980 -
Clydebank 1 Swindon Town 2
Stirling Albion 0 Preston North End 2

Wednesday 30th July 1980 -
Clyde 0 Swindon Town 2

Thursday 31st July 1980 -
Dunfermline Athletic 2 Swansea City 3
Queen of the South 2 Sheffield Wednesday 1
Stenhousemuir 0 Barnsley 1

Saturday 2nd August 1980 -
Kilmarnock 1 Sheffield Wednesday 2
Northwich Victoria 2 Berwick Rangers 2
Raith Rovers 0 Swansea City 2
St Johnstone 2 Hartlepool 2

Sunday 3rd August 1980 -
Partick Thistle 0 Coventry City 2
Runcorn 2 East Fife 0

Monday 4th August 1980 -
Arbroath 0 Hartlepool 3
Ayr United 0 West Ham United 0

Tuesday 5th August 1980 -
Dumbarton 0 Coventry City 6
Hibernian 1 Swansea City 1

Wednesday 6th August 1980 -
Motherwell 2 Coventry City 1

All of which brings me to the conclusion that neither site can be relied upon for accuracy or completeness when it comes to Anglo-Scottish results.

Don't see Cowdenbeath v Cardiff City on July 27 there either - or maybe it doesn't count as its not Anglo-Scottish.

Game definitely happened - I was there.

I seem to recall there`s a photograph of the St.Mirren/Manchester City featuring Bert Trautmann in the Scottish Football Book for that season. Co-incidentally, I`m reading Bert Trautmann`s biography at the moment TRAUTMANN`S JOURNEY, HITLER YOUTH TO CUP FINAL HERO. I read his autobiography STEPPES TO WEMBLEY years ago.

Cowdenbeath v Cardiff City on July 27
Thanks. I didn't include it as I had no knowledge of the match. Cardiff City also played Montrose on July 29 but I didn't list it as I don't have the result.

I have traced three further matches for which I can't find the result -

July 29, Queens Park v Barnsley
July 31, Albion Rovers v West Bromwich Albion
August 4, Bangor City v Berwick Rangers

I think Cowden v Cardiff was 0-1, if memory serves me correctly. It was dead boring, I remember that.

I'll check the Montrose score later when I get a chance.
