Andrew Watson (Scotland 1881-82)

Post by ScottishFA » Fri Oct 05, 2012 3:32 pm

I'm doing a bit of research into Andrew Watson, widely recognised as the first black footballer, and am having some trouble confirming his date of death. It is widely quoted as 16 January 1902 in Sydney, Australia - the only trouble being I can find no record of his death in the New South Wales registers, or for that matter in any of the Australian newspapers. In fact, I'm struggling to find any contemporary records of him from about 1887 onwards.

There is certainly a Sydney connection of some kind as his son Rupert Andrew Watson married there in 1915.

Before I spend time looking into this more deeply, has anyone else looked into this, or know where the death date came from? Any help appreciated.

I'm really trying to find out what happened to him after he finished playing football. I've done extensive searches of archives and can find no trace of him (or his wife) after the late 1880s.

Happy to share what I have, send me a PM.

Hello,

I did a quick search myself and found a note in Dundee Courier on 15 January 1886 stating.

"Mr. Andrew Watson, the left back of the famous Queen's Park, leaves for California in a month."

Well, if he went to California, he came back pretty soon. He took part in an exhibition match in Dundee in June 1886, and played for Bootle in 1887/88. That seems to be the end of his playing career, but I'd be happy to be proved wrong.

He did probably leave the country after that, as by the 1891 census he and his wife are nowhere to be seen, but their children are living with their grandmother (Jessie Watson's mother).

Is there any merit starting a Charitable Foundation in the same way as the "Arthur Wharton Foundation". www.arthurwharton.com There is even a book by Phil Vasilli however at the time of writing in the late 1990's Andrew Watsons existence was not known. It is still worth a read though http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-First-Black ... hil+vasili
They do appear to have some prominent backers and perhaps similar backing may help fund further research in to his life? Perhaps it may even fund a Biography.
A prominent Ambassador would certainly help?Any suggestions?

I visited Andrew Watson's grave in Richmond Cemetery this week. Read my blog to see photos and comments:
http://www.scottishsporthistory.com/1/p ... -more.html

From a record-keeping perspective, perhaps the main discovery is his date of birth, which was 24 May 1856. Yet another case of an 'accepted' date being wrong - no real surprise as every single census, not to mention his marriage certificates, death certificate and even Glasgow University matriculation document, all indicated he was a year older than the 1857 date so widely quoted. However, with no extant birth records from Guyana, I couldn't verify that until now, so it was a major bonus to have the date on his headstone.
