Last 30,000 plus non old firm attendance?

Post by Ne24 » Sun Dec 30, 2012 9:51 am

I presume we have to go back to the 70's to find a club other than the Old Firm pulling in over 30,000 for a league game, an Edinburgh Derby perhaps or the Hibs v Rangers game in 1975 would appear the most likely candidates.

Apart from as you say an Edinburgh Derby aside I think you might have to go back even further than the 70s . Even in the Scottish Cup when in the days that did bring out the fairweather fans I still cant think of a 30k plus crowd. Without going into a long search (and its nearly midnight here in New Zealand ) I know Dundee and Hibs had some healthy Cup crowds in the 70s (by Scottish standards ) any way I do have to work tomorrow (New Years Eve) so I'm off to bed. PS Happy New Year to everyone, I dont care if your team doesnt win anything in the next year as long as their still playing football in the next hundred years.

Last 30,000+ for ANY home game for a non-OF Scottish side was on 09/08/2006 when 32,459 saw Hearts v AEK Athens in a third round Champions League qualifier played at Murrayfield. But specifically for league matches, somewhere buried in this site are total figures for the number of 30,000+, 40,000+ games etc. Anyway, here’s the last time it happened for those clubs which have drawn 30,000+ gates. Any club not mentioned has never drawn a 30,000+ home gate

01/01/1976 Hibernian v Hearts 32,923
01/01/1975 Hearts v Hibernian 35,969
21/04/1973 Aberdeen v Rangers 30,957
27/11/1971 Partick Thistle v Celtic 33,185
04/01/1969 Kilmarnock v Rangers 32,893
16/11/1968 St Mirren v Rangers 42,653
21/08/1963 Dundee v Rangers 33,283
01/10/1960 Third Lanark v Rangers 32,500
08/03/1958 Clyde v Rangers 31,500
02/11/1957 Queen’s Park v Rangers 30,824
09/03/1957 Motherwell v Rangers 30,000
25/04/1949 Morton v Rangers 40,000 (at Love Street)

The official attendance for Dunfermline Athletic v Celtic on 27/04/1968 was 27,816 which is the ground record for East End Park. However thousands forced entry and a reasonable estimate of actual attendance would be 33,000.

Last 40,000+
23/02/1974 Hibernian v Celtic 48,554
16/11/1968 St Mirren v Rangers 42,653
02/01/1961 Hearts v Hibernian 43,000
28/02/1953 Third Lanark v Celtic 40,000
03/02/1951 Aberdeen v Rangers 42,000
25/04/1949 Morton v Rangers 40,000 (at Love Street)
01/09/1948 Partick Thistle v Rangers 40,000
12/01/1929 Queen’s Park v Rangers 60,000

Last 50,000+
01/01/1960 Hibernian v Hearts 54,000
17/03/1956 Hearts v Rangers 50,000
12/01/1929 Queen’s Park v Rangers 60,000

Last 60,000+
02/01/1956 Hibernian v Hearts 60,812
12/01/1929 Queen’s Park v Rangers 60,000

Specifically on yesterday's attendance of 30,117 for Queen's Park v Rangers. This represents QP's 13th biggest home league gate. All but one of the twelve bigger were v Rangers. The exception is the 40,000 who attended the first match at the present Hampden Park v Celtic on 31/10/1903. That is QP's 3rd highest home league attendance. Yesterday´s crowd is also QP's largest outwith the top flight, beating the previous record of 27,602 for the B Division match with Kilmarnock on 14/01/1950. This latter now becomes Queen's Park's 16th biggest home gate and as only the second non-Rangers match among them, the highest QP league attendance involving a non-Glasgow club.
