Re: Scottish club record for consecutive appearances?

Team lines would be the obvious method but whether Aberdeen kept them that far back (though in the case of Jim Rickaby's book we are talking just over twenty years as opposed to forty for Kevin Stirling's so it's more likely).

Given the pre-internet publication date of the Rickaby book (1987 IIRC) it's highly unlikely the Glasgow-based ET would have been used for research. I would think it's more likely to have been the Aberdeen Evening Express. Certainly, when writing my Killie 125 book in the early 1990s I used the Kilmarnock Standard (and up to the 1930s, Kilmarnock Herald) rather than any Glasgow-based paper.

I looked up the following week's Hibs programme, which lists the teams, and Shewan is in the Aberdeen side.

Reducing the initial query to a more realistically achievable “most consecutive League appearances for a Scottish club” I was able to use John Litster's work to whittle down to just a handful of candidates.

You gents might be quite interested to know (if you don’t already) that Doug Smith (Dundee United, CH) is the only man to have a 100% appearance record in seven consecutive League seasons, from 1964-65. On five were Johnny Jackson (Partick Thistle, GK) from 1927-28, Charlie Shaw (Celtic, GK) from 1913-14, Willie Robb (Rangers, GK) from 1920-21, Bobby Brown (Rangers, GK) from 1946-47, Cammy Murray (St Mirren, CH) from 1962-63, Ally Shewan (Aberdeen, CH) from 1964-65 and Walter Boyd (Meadowbank Thistle, WH) from 1982-83.

Using good resources (Arab Archive, Chic Sharp files etc) I’ve finely tuned the games totals for all of the above and Johnny Jackson stands as “leader in the clubhouse”, with Doug Smith a close second.

258 - Johnny Jackson (Partick Thistle, GK) from 28th August 1926 to 25th March 1933
251 - Doug Smith (Dundee Utd, CH) from 19th February 1964 to 18th September 1971

The only guy still in with a shout is Walter Boyd. According to John's research, Walter Boyd’s 5 season in a row (5 x 39 = 195) was sandwiched between 37/39 in season 1981/82 and 43/44 in 1987/88. This makes for an intriguing possibility of 275 League games in a row.

Would anyone be in a position to clarify Walter’s last game missed in 1981/82 and his only game missed in 1987/88?

If Rothman's is right then he missed the 22nd league game (of 39) of the season, home v Brechin City on Feb 20th 1982 and the game he missed in 1987-88 was the eighth, away to Raith Rovers on Sep 15th 1987.

^ Thanks to that man for that missing jigsaw piece.

Most Consecutive Scottish League Appearances
258 - Johnny Jackson (Partick Thistle, GK) 28th August 1926 to 25th March 1933
251 - Doug Smith (Dundee Utd, CH) 19th February 1964 to 18th September 1971
________________________________________________________________________________

219 - Walter Boyd (Meadowbank Thistle, WH) 23rd February 1982 to 12th September 1987
217 - Willie Robb (Rangers, GK) 13th April 1920 to 24th October 1925
197 - Ally Shewan (Aberdeen, CH) 19th October 1963 to 23rd April 1969
194 - Henry Smith (Heart of Midlothian, GK) 3rd April 1982 to 4th April 1987
193 - Charlie Shaw (Celtic, GK) 16th August 1913 to 30th September 1918
192 - Kenny Thomson (Dunfermline, WH) 15th September 1976 to 25th April 1981
179 - Bobby Brown (Rangers, GK) 10th August 1946 to 16th April 1952
170 - Cammy Murray (St Mirren, CH) 22nd August 1962 to 27th April 1967

Notes:
* Query includes all SFL, SPL, SPFL matches 1890 to date.
* Query limited to club loyalty.
* The Top Two positions are confirmed beyond challengers.
* There are several candidates who have 100% attendance records for four consecutive League seasons (e.g. Graeme Armstrong, John Colquhoun at a glance A to C) who could nestle into to a Top Ten position. Henry Smith and Kenny Thomson are two such examples that were looked at, and duly nestled in as above.

I suppose it's only to be expected that the majority were goalkeepers and there are no forwards on the list.

Aye, extra kudos for Walter Boyd who must have been in a fair few scraps of the blood and snotters variety!

Dunfermline's Kenny Thomson made 192 consecutive league appearances between 15 September 1976 and 25 April 1981. He also played in 227 straight competitive matches between 15 September 1976 and 26 August 1981. Then Stanton signed Doug Considine...

We had a Scouse student who got so pissed on the stuff he couldn't remember the name. He spent three years (daily) in the student bar asking for a pint of Digby's.

I thought Drybrough's was meant to have been a pretty poor pint - the pair of you make it sound like it was half-decent. I'm not old enough to remember it personally.....
