Island Clubs in the Scottish Cup

Post by HibeeJibee » Tue Oct 14, 2014 12:19 pm

There's a thread on the P&B forum discussing Orkney FC who have joined mainland football this season in the form of the North Caledonian League. For a few seasons that league has accepted Orkney, Shetland and Lewis & Harris into some of their cups. It's, technically, Senior football. Shetland also entered the North Challenge Cup but it got wound-up after their first season when HL expanded to 18 clubs.

Anyway, the thread has rambled-off in to discuss islands and outlying areas, and this led to the question of Oban and then to Argyll & Bute.

Bute Rangers, from Rothesay, entered the Scottish Cup in the 1880s and 1890s. Albeit without any success. Are they the only club from an island ever to have done so?

Veering away from our normal territory for a moment, there is, of course, a case of an "island" club winning its national cup competition in the recent past. Think about it.

Taking island states aside, I would assume that's the case anytime a team from Copenhagen wins the Danish Cup.

There are two island team which compete in the FA Cup. Newport (Isle of Wight) have done so since 1929 and have reached the competition proper several times. Since Newport has a population of around 25,000, the island has about 140,000 as a whole and it's only five miles to the mainland, then it's much easier for a team from here to compete not just in knockout tournaments but in mainland league competitions. They are currently in the Wessex League - level nine.

Much more recent is Guernsey FC. They were only formed in 2011 and started competing in the FA Cup in 2014-15. They are currently in Division One South of the Isthmian League (level eight, having started out at level ten in the Combined Counties League). Island population is, like the Isle of Wight, much greater than any Scottish island (est 65,000) but travelling distance for matches is far greater than Orkney.

Isn't Fratton Park on the mainland?

Going further afield, Sardinian club Cagliari won the Italian league in 1970, playing in the European Cup the following season. Corsican club Bastia won the French Cup in 1981 and prior to that reached the UEFA Cup final in 1978, losing to PSV Eindhoven.

Forgot about them.

There are also some interesting inter-island competitions as well.

That's good enough for me. The nearest I've been is Gosport but my mate who lived there at the time is a Saints fan so I never visited Fratton Park.

And following last night's 1-1 draw at Mansfield, Concord Rangers too.

Well done the Beach Boys.

Wouldn't it be nice if they could win the replay?
