Scots in Europe 1963-64

Post by Partick Thistle » Sun Mar 22, 2015 4:09 pm

League 1962/63:
1 Rangers 57 pts
2 Kilmarnock 48 pts
3 Partick Thistle 46 pts
4 Celtic 44 pts
5 Heart of Midlothian 43 pts

Scottish Cup 1962/63:
Rangers 3–0 Celtic

League Cup 1962/63:
Heart of Midlothian 1–0 Kilmarnock

QF for European Cup 63-64:
Rangers

QF for Cup Winners Cup 63-64:
Celtic (as SC runners up)

QF for Inter-Cities Fairs Cup 63-64:
Heart Of Midlothian
Partick Thistle

Question...

How was entry to the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup decided? Next 2 from the League or 1 from the League plus League Cup winner? Why no Killie?

Scottish will hopefully confirm this, but, I always understood, Kilmarnock were sent as Scotland's representatives to the New York International tournament, rather than the Fairs Cup.

This first incarnation of the UEFA Cup was introduced in 1955 as the International Industries Fairs Inter-Cities Cup (conventionally shortened to the Fairs Cup). It was open to the cities of Europe that sponsored international industrial fairs. It was intended that cities would field representative teams and would be spread over two seasons. The first tournament actually took 3 seasons to complete. By 1960/61 it became an annual tournament.

In the early 60’s the competition opened up to the leading clubs of each country that were not eligible for the other two European tournaments. For the 1963/64 tournament Partick Thistle qualified as the highest placed club from a Scottish city that held an International Trade Fair. Hearts also qualified as Edinburgh’s representative with Kilmarnock missing out due to the qualification rules.

This was covered fairly comprehensively in a thread from August 2008, 'Qualification for the Fairs Cup in the 1960's'.
