Perthshire v Renfrewshire 1888

Post by ScottishFA » Fri May 22, 2015 6:35 pm

Bit of an obscure one this, does anyone have the teams for the inter-county match Perthshire v Renfrewshire on 21 April 1888?

Renfrewshire won 3-2 at Balhousie Park, but the teams are not given in the papers. I'm particularly interested in the Perthshire team.

Hi,

I searched the BNA and there was one match report (no preview line-up beforehand).

The players noted from the report were:
Pertshire: Blair (GK); Robertson (FB), Elliott (FB); Gloag (CF). Hunt (F), Mead (F).
Renfrewshire: Downie (GK); Mulhardie (F), Seymour (F).

A player named Clark were also mentioned, but I could not say with certainty for which shire.

GK, goalie; FB, full back, F, forward.

Perth Library has copies of three newspapers for that period on microfilm, Advertiser, Constitutional and Perthshire Courier. If its the Perth Advertiser that's online on the BNA then there might be a good chance the game was covered in one of the others.

Not forgetting the Renfrewshire/Paisley newspapers may have coverage of this. The Paisley and Renfrewshire Gazette and Paisley Daily Express are available in the Paisley Library, which normally have good football coverage.

I've managed to glean that Auld and Thomson (of Queen's Park for some reason) would be in the Renfrewshire XI
The press were also rueful that Thomson (goal) and Menzies would not be in the Perthshire XI.

No surprise that QP were included in Renfrewshire teams, as i think it was then in the East Renfrewshire Parliamentary Constituency. I play lawn bowls and even to this day QP bowling club and surrounding clubs still play in the Renfrewshire Championships.

Mount Florida(Hampden Park) didn`t become incorporated into Glasgow until 1906; before that it was in Renfrewshire.
