Scottish Football Historical Archive

Postby RobertB » Thu Jan 05, 2017 5:31 pm

I apologise in advance but I just couldn't get the 'email us' section to work.
The Scottish Junior International section..... Scotland 5 England 1 April 8 1973 has Steele scoring two but he isn't listed in the team.
An oversight obviously as crunching names, figures, dates etc....

Great work on the site absolute goldmine for info.

PS Happy New Year, belatedly albeit, to each and every one of you.
Expect a deluge of Arthurlie questions in the coming weeks and months as I finally try and write their history.

There is a line below which states "This is the selected team in the Times on 19 Mar."
The correct line up has yet to be found.
So anyone help?

By a strange coincidence we have just sorted the line-up for this game out thanks to an Irvine Meadow friend who found a coloured team photograph that we worked out was the Junior Scotland team from this match and with a bit more detective work found the actual team that took the field.

The photograph was taken at Manor Park, Nuneaton on 8 April 1973

England 1(1) Scotland 5 (2)
England scorer: Holmes
Scotland scorers: Bell, Pettigrew 2, Steele 2 (1 penalty)

There are 15 people in the photograph and they are:

The team that took the field (4-3-3):

John Young Carluke Rovers
Jim Scott Cumbernauld United
???? Calder Mugiemoss
John Crooks (Captain) Cumnock
Jacky Mordue Cambuslang Rangers
Gibby Kerr Lanark United
Brian Bell Kello Rovers
Willie McCallum Cambuslang Rangers
John Cummings Cambuslang Rangers
Willie Pettigrew East Kilbride Thistle
Billy Steele Benburb

Substitute Goalkeeper

Davie Nicholl Dundee Osborne

Others

Laurie Swan Newburgh (originally selected but failed a fitness test immediately before the game and Gibby Kerr took his place leaving just a goalkeeper on the bench)

Davie McLaggan Cambuslang Rangers (Manager)
Dunky Black Irvine Meadow XI (Physio)

I hope Brian can pick this post up and amend the Junior Internationals spreadsheet on the Scottish Football Historical Archive Website?

We have not yet been able to put a name to every face in the photograph, Does anybody think they can help?

The SJFA Retention Book for 72/3 gives Calder's initial as "A". I have a feeling he may have been Sandy Calder, ie Alexander, but that's from memory.

Thanks for the first initial and a possible name to fill the gap.

Some of you may have noticed that the site has gone down for good this week.

This is due to several factors, mainly the large price rise for renewing the domain name and secondly, personal health and family issues had forced me to put maintaining the site on the backburner, as was noticable by the distinct lack of regular updates over the last few months.

However I have been looking at alternative options and found a free host and free domain name (virtually identical to my old one) and will be uploading the material onto their server over the coming weeks.

In the meantime the old site is available via the wayback machine
