I wonder what happend to Billy (William Gilbert) Steel. He was born in Blantyre, Lanarkshire in 1908. Played for St Johnstone, Liverpool, Birmingham and Derby before WW2. Manager for Airdrieonians and Third Lanark up to June 1964. When and where did he die?

William Gilbert Steel was born on 6 February 1908 in Blantyre. He married in Glasgow on 20 June 1933 and the marriage certificate says he was a “football player”. The family home was is Glasgow. Sadly his wife died in 1949 and his job is stated then as “metal turner”. He re-married in 1959 in Rutherglen. Sadly, his second wife passed away in Rutherglen in 1972 aged 66.

Like others I am sure I could not find William Gilbert Steel with a death recorded in Scotland. I saw from some other websites the year 1990 was given as a year of death. I had a look at other William Steels whose death was recorded around 1990 in Rutherglen or fairly nearby. This gave me a William Steel Steel whose death was recorded in Motherwell and Wishaw in 1991 at age 84. It is unusual to see someone with the same middle name as surname. I looked back and could not see a birth certificate for William Steel Steel. By a strange coincidence in William Gilbert Steel’s first marriage certificate the transcription of his signature could be read as William S Steel. A death between 1 January and 5 February 1991 would have made William Gilbert Steel 84 years of age.

Guesswork I am afraid but it may be worth a look?
