Junior Cup Final 1884

Postby Partick Thistle » Thu May 25, 2017 10:01 am

Sat 5th April 1884
Partick Elm 2 Burnbank 1 (Scottish Junior Cup Semi Final)
played at Jordanvale Park

Am I right in thinking that the Junior Cup ran for several seasons before the SJFA took over in 1886-87?

My main question is, does anyone know how Partick Elm got on in the Final of 1884?

Brian McColl’s Scottish Football Historical Archive says:

“Six years prior to the formation of the present Association, an attempt was made in August 1880 to form a Scottish Junior FA. Of the 48 clubs which sent in for membership, 30 were admitted, 6 refused, 4 withdrew their application, 5 didn't send in the required particulars and 3 were expelled. Based primarily in the Glasgow and district area. The SJFA, like its successor also ran a Scottish Junior Cup competition before apparently disbanding at the end of the season.”

I see that the result you have given is quoted in the newspapers as “the Partick Junior Cup”. I could not find the result of the final but did find an earlier result on 16 February 1884 where Partick Elm are reported as beating Elgin (Partick) 3:0 in the same competition.

Ah, the Partick Junior Cup, you're right, not quite as I had dreamt it!

Thanks Douglas.
