Junior Scotland manager 1973/74 season

Postby bluedragon » Thu Jun 15, 2017 7:20 am

Can anyone help with the name of the Junior Scotland team manager (if there was one?) in the 1973/74 season?

Davie McLaggan (Cambuslang Rangers) was the first manager and was appointed for the Junior International played on 8 April 1973 v England at Nuneaton.

John Binnie (Linlithgow Rose) was in post for the game against England on 18 April 1975 at Walsall.

In 1973/74 Junior Scotland played 2 matches (7 April 1974 v England and 19 May 1974 v Wales). I have a team photograph of the line-up for the Wales match that has the 11 players plus 3 substitutes and two track-suited trainers but no manager. One of the trainers is Duncan Black (Irvine Meadow XI) but I do not know the identity of the second one. In the team photographs either side of the 1973/74 season Davie McLaggan and John Binnie are in the line-up with their players. Was there a manager in 1973/74?

I do not have ready access to a copy of “The Juniors 100 Years. A Centenary History of Scottish Junior Football” by David McGlone and Bill McLure that may have the answer. I have found it difficult to find the answer from newspaper coverage.

If anyone can answer the question or provide any help it would be very much appreciated. If anyone has any ideas as to who might be the second trainer to the team on 19 May 1974 that would also be a great help.

The Evening Times of May 15 1974 reports
"The SJFA Selection Committee has recognised the Dunipace revival by picking two Westfield players......"

Thanks for that. I have now found that Paddy Winton (Jeanfield Swifts) managed the Junior Scotland team that season but as the newspaper report suggests he probably managed a team that was selected for him.
