CLYDE 1, CELTIC 1

Postby LEATHERSTOCKING » Wed Jul 26, 2017 3:37 pm

Can anyone confirm who actually played centre half for Celtic in the last Charity Cup Final in May 1961? I have seen three candidates suggested(newspaper, website & book) - Billy McNeill, John McNamee & John Kurila. Additionally, who refereed the game and who am I missing from the following in Clyde`s lineup? - Tommy McCulloch, Harry Haddock, ?, Willie Finlay, Davey Thomson, ?, ?, ?, Jim McLean, Willie McCulloch & Bobby Steele.

Celtic handbook for 61/62 gives appearance totals, with McNamee and McNeill one each, and Kurila none in Charity cup. This tallies with Paul Lunney's Complete Record (not always reliable, I know) with McNamee in the semi v QP, McNeill in the final v Clyde.

The Evening Times on 10 May (back page) also confirms that McNeill played.

As for the Clyde team and referee, can't help. The usually reliable and comprehensive Soccer Star didn't give stats for the match.

McNeill`s the one I`d pencilled in but thank you kindly for the backup there.

I've got the Clyde team as McCulloch (T), Walters and Haddock; Sim, Finlay and White; McCulloch (W), Currie, McLean, Thomson and Steel. Note Steel has no "e" on the end. Cheers

What a boy! Thank you. Can you help out with these teams reported fragmentally?: 25/5/1940 vs. QP 20/5/1941 vs. PT, 12/5/1942 vs. PT & 8/5/1946 vs. 3rd.

Always glad to assist where I can!

Anyway, I'll email you three of the four teams you need, the one I can't find is Clyde v PTFC on 20th May 1941.

I can't remember if I've raised it on here before (I've certainly been in touch with "Partick Thistle" and he can't help either), so if anyone comes across the Clyde team for that game I'd be eternally grateful.

Cheers

I`ve searched for that one too but all I can find are the Bully Wee scorers - Wallace 2(1 pen.), Fitzsimmons 2, Mills. I think it`s one of these eternally lost. Of all Queen`s Park`s competitive games since 1871, I`ve resigned myself to never finding who played in the black & white hoops in just 9 of all those played(all between 1875 & 1889) and the reason being that they won all of them by a country mile so the papers obviously didn`t deem it worthwhile devoting the space. Shame really because I`ll never know just who scored most goals in a game resulting 15-1, 14-1 etc.

I have found the proposed Clyde line up in the Daily Record - 20th May 1941.

Brown, Kirk, Winning, Beaton, Kennedy, Weir, Agnew, Mills, Fitzsimmons, Wallace, Gillies.

The sooner the BNA get the Daily Record, North British Daily Mail et al online the better; the West Sussex Bugle for 1864 isn`t much help to me!

Thanks a million Craig, I've been searching the match reports for that match for years now between all the usual websites and in the Mitchell as well, but totally missed the pre-match articles. Great stuff, that game has been bugging me for years. I'd better go and do my email to LS now...
