ScottishFA wrote:Some answers, by looking through club histories and news reports:

Blantyre Vics: Beadle was in fact Beedie: William A C Beedie, who played over 200 games for Portsmouth in the 1920s.

Clydebank: Lang should read Laing; I think this is probably James Laing who then played for Strathclyde, Bathgate and Third Lanark.

Penicuik: Charles Hornal, goalkeeper who was previously with Gala Fairydean and a student at Edinburgh University.

And just for clarification, those two Benburb players came from the previous club, as the present Benburb was founded in 1899.
Thanks Andy. Much appreciated. Just to add to your point about Benburb. In the records we have shown these two players as playing for "Benburb [1]". Other players who were playing for today's Benburb FC are shown as "Benburb [3]". This ensures consistency with Brian McColl's Club Directory. I should have made that clear when I said:".....missing forenames from today's Junior clubs....." in my post.

Darvel – Allan (1927) - is William Allan who signed for Hamilton Accies in 1928 before moving to Motherwell in 1933 after which he had shorter spells at Partick Thistle and Albion Rovers. He was in demand from Senior clubs after being capped twice at Darvel but instead moved to Burnbank Athletic where he won three more caps before signing for Accies.

Cambuslang Rangers – Chalmers (1918-19) - is David Chalmers who was also capped as a St Anthony’s player before signing for Clydebank in 1921.

Another request for help please. Here are the remaining 107 players who we know played for the SJFA XI but we do not have a forename(s) or even just a first initial. They are ordered in alphabetical order by club name. The club names are consistent with the names in Brian McColl’s club directory and so, for example, [2] after a club name means it is the second club to carry that name. The year after the players’ name is the year(s) they played for the SJFA XI.

If anyone can help us get below the 100 mark it would be very much appreciated.

Willie McGonnigle, Maryhill Hibs. An outside left, not to be confused with Willie 'Peter' McGonagle, Celtic left back.

Willie McHarg, Denny Hibs.

I think the Rosslyn Juniors player in 1931 may have been Peter Ronan, not Rowan. He signed for Cardiff City at the end of the season.

Gordon - Thanks for spotting the error in his surname that probably came from the newspapers of the day.

We have found another to make our outstanding total 100!

Scoular (Newmains) (1907) – is James D Scoular who joined Queen’s Park in September 1907. John Litster's disk has him also having short spells with Morton and Kilmarnock. He was serving his apprenticeship as a solicitor while playing and eventually was in practice in Stornoway.

Thanks to finding some missing line-ups we are now back to 105 players without a forename(s)/initial.

UPDATES

Ardrossan Winton Rovers - Lindsay (1922)

We are wondering if this is Tommy Lindsay who signed for Kilmarnock in 1924 and then had a ten year league career mostly in England. We know Lindsay (AWR) joined Ardeer Thistle in 1922 and that Tommy Lindsay signed for Killie from Ardeer Thistle. However, we cannot quite join up the dots as we know there were Lindsays at Pollok and Renfrew at around the same time.

Glasgow Perthshire – Bennie (1927)

We are trying to see if there might just be connection between this ‘keeper and Bobby Bennie who was a ‘keeper at Irvine Meadow XI immediately before and after the Second World War. While it is just possible despite the gap in years there might be a family connection.

Myrtle [1] - Shearey (1893)

He is actually Shearer and he played for Maryhill Myrtle.

NEW LINE UPS

We have some new additions:

Blairhall Colliery - Wilson (1962)

Saltcoats Victoria - Struthers (1965)

Blairgowrie - Roan (1965)

Yoker Athletic - McGrath (1962)

As ever, any help will be greatly appreciated.
