Scottish Cup ties in Edinburgh

Post by HibeeJibee » Wed Sep 20, 2017 1:55 pm

There are 4 Scottish Cup ties in Edinburgh this weekend in R1 - Spartans v Vale of Leithen, LTHV v Inverurie Loco Works, Edinburgh University v Lossiemouth, Civil Service Strollers v Strathspey Thistle. There hasn't been more than 3 since the cup went 'all in' from 2007-08. Anyone know when there were last 4 Scottish Cup ties in Edinburgh, and indeed when there were last 5 such?

Fairly commonplace in first round draws in the 1920s and 1930s!

1927-28: Civil Service, Hearts, Hibs, Leith (though Hibs had a walkover)
1928/29: Civil Service, Hearts, Hibs, St Bernards
1929/30: Hearts, Hibs, Murrayfield, St Bernards
1930/31: Civil Service, Hearts, Hibs, Murrayfield, St Bernards - all on same day
1931/32: Edinburgh City, Hearts, Hibs, Leith, St Bernards - Edinburgh City moved their tie to the Wednesday and played at Tynecastle
1932/33: Edinburgh City, Hearts, Hibs, Leith, St Bernards - Edinburgh City moved their tie to the Wednesday and played at Tynecastle
1933/34: Hearts, Hibs, Leith, St Bernards

After that the SFA must have changed balls.

Thanks, so 84yrs, that's quite a stretch! Spartans v Vale of Leithen is on Friday night due to an Edinburgh City league game, so there won't be 4 on at the same time sadly.

One freak of the situation is that with Hibs away and Hearts reversing their game to Partick due to the delays with Tynecastle's main stand, it's also one of the rare times when both of the 2 main Edinburgh clubs have league games but neither is at home.

There is also an Alex Jack Cup SF at Heriot-Watt University and a Junior game at Craigroyston.

There is definately one occasion and possibly more under the 10 ,14 , 14 league set up when Hearts , Hibs & Meadowbank were all away on the Same Saturday. All 3 were in different divisions. And I remember John Fairgrieve taking the SFL to task over it in his column in the Sunday Mail. Adjacent clubs Albion Rovers & Airdrie have both been at home and away on the same Saturdays this season and they are in the same division, that's a puzzle to me.
