Scores of Scotland XI matches, 1945 and 1954

Post by ScottishFA » Tue May 23, 2006 2:16 pm

I'm trying to locate the scores of these matches played by Scotland XIs:

18 November 1945 v Combined Services in Hamburg

16 November 1954 v Kilmarnock at Rugby Park

30 November 1954 v Falkirk at Brockville

(The latter two, and a match against Hibs which was a 3-0 win for Scotland, were all arranged to help Scotland prepare to face Hungary in December)

Killie historian John Livingston & programme editor Richard Cairns have comprehensive details on 'non-first class' games at Rugby Park. if you don't already have contact details then pm or e-mail me for them.

Does anyone have the date of Alex Dowdell`s testimonial match @ Leicester in 1966-67 when Leicester drew 1-1 with a Scotland Xl?

Re the question marks: Dave Smith & Alan Anderson for the Scotland team and Aberdonian John Sjoberg for Leicester.

It would have been Jim Scott of Hibs at that time.

I don`t quite know why I didn`t type in "SJOBERG" because I remember him well. Funnily enough he isn`t in Martin Joyce`s FOOTBALL LEAGUE PLAYERS book.

Who is the Hunter (Hibs) ? Willie Hunter didn't sign for Hibs until 1968 and in any case presumably he's listed as Hunter (Motherwell).

Am I missing something really obvious?

Missed that. Yes, Hunter (Hibs) is a bit of a mystery. Regarding the question marks over subs, I don't think there would have been any in May 1966.

I can only think it`s a misprint because the only Hunters about @ that time were Eddie(Queen`s Park), Ian(Dunfermline), John(Falkirk) & Billy(Hamilton) & don`t think it`s any of them. I can`t even see any Hibs players of that era with a similar name. Mystery man.

Match programme from Leicester V Scotland clearly states Willie Hunter Motherwell and Scotland, there is also a photo of him on page 9 saying Motherwell.

Got my wires crossed ,didnt see there were two Hunters listed . match programme states Pat Stanton as the right half so thats where the Hibs bit comes from.
