Wembley Appearances

Post by Rob R » Sun Mar 18, 2018 7:06 pm

I remember reading a few years ago that Kenny Dalglish had the most appearances at Wembley for a non Englishman. With Spurs playing their home games there this season , will or has that record been broken.

approx dalglish total matches at wembley was 21 club, and 5 that im aware of internationally,

again approx vertonghen or eriksen have played at wembley 15+ times, so mid season next season they will overtake the total, but its slightly unfair to include them as playing your home matches at the ground gives a distinct advantage, dalglish total was put together by cup finals and charity shield matches.

the record for anyone is 59 i believe held by tony adams

So if Tony Adams holds the record at 59, Dalglish's record of 21 is a fairly healthy return for a non Englishman. Taking that Spurs go back to WHL next season it looks like Dalglish's record is safe for now. I wonder what Scot & non Scot holds the Hampden appearance record. Queens Park players excluded.

Is Dalglish really still the record? I don't have any access to stats but in Dalglish's day they didn't play semi finals at Wembley as they do now. Given the number of FA Cup Finals the likes of Arsenal have been in with associated semi finals and almost all of their players full Internationals who have probably played a few games at Wembley for their countries too has nobody beaten it? Dalglish would benefit of course from the Home Internationals still being about when he played and getting a visit to Wembley every second year for that.

Regarding most appearances @ Hampden, it seems a pity to discount Queen`s Park players from a list of "most appearances". John Balfour McAlpine holds the record of competitive games played in front of the classic slopes. He made his 1st XI debut on 31st January 1919 in a 2-0 win over 3rd Lanark and bid adeiu in a 1-0 success vs. Falkirk on 14th April 1934(both @ Hampden) playing 244 league games & 47 assorted others(Scottish Cup, Glasgow Cup, Merchants Charity Cup & assorted other charity cup games) there. Additionally he played for Glasgow against Sheffield twice @ Hampden and, recognised as one of the best inside/outside lefts in Scotland during the 30s, would have played a goodly number of times for the full international side but for his misfortune to have been born in England @ a time when a strict birth rule applied so he was limited to a couple of League International caps(neither played down Leatherby Drive). Records of his appearances for the Strollers(Queen`s second XI) were sadly lost in the fire which ravaged Hampden on Christmas Day 1945 but it`s likely that these games plus various friendlies will have pushed his total to well over 300. "J.B." or "Mutt" McAlpine played a total of 473 league games and 82 others during his one club career and scored 192 goals in all competitions. Ross Caven overtook McAlpine`s league appearance record in 1999 but Mutt`s goalscoring feat is likely to remain unchallenged forever.
