Teddy Scott's testimonial 1999 (Aberdeen vs ManU)?

Post by Matt » Wed Dec 20, 2006 1:23 pm

Today's Scotsman reviews Aberdeen largest crowds of the past few years:

"... Attendances at Pittodrie have been poor this season, with only 10,594 turning up to Aberdeen's most recent home game, the 2-1 win over Falkirk on 9 December. Aside from the Elton John concert in 2004, the stadium has not witnessed a capacity crowd of around 21,600 since 1999, when Manchester United travelled north for former kit manager Teddy Scott's testimonial. In 2003 the attendance broke the 20,000 barrier when Aberdeen played Liverpool in a match to celebrate the club's centenary..."

I could not find any sources particularly regarding the official attendance figure for Scott's testimonial. Apart from that the Scotsman claims that the last time Pittodrie was sold out for a competitive match was against Rangers in January 1996. However, I could not find a game between the two sides that was played in January 1996...

On 07 October 1995 a fixture between these 2 drew in 22500, another 1-0 win for Rangers with Moore scoring the goal.

The league game between AFC and Rangers on 25th Feb 1996 drew in 21000, according to the stats. Paul Gascoine scored.

Hope that helps

Soccerbase says the attendance for the game against Rangers on 1.12.96 drew 21,500. Ok Soccerbase is far from gospel, but it must have got these figures from somewhere. Still, that is almost exactly 10 years ago so the gist of the article is correct even if the dates may be a bit out.

Official SFL figures show the crowd for Aberdeen-Rangers on 25/2/96 as 19,842 and the match on 1/12/96 as 19,168. The last 20,000+ crowd at Pittodrie in a recognised first class competition was on 7/10/95 v Rangers in the league when the crowd was 20,351

Of course capacity at Pittodrie is slightly less than it used to be. When it first became an all-seater the capacity was 24,000

BTW you don't need to be successful to draw big crowds. In 1994-95 Aberdeen's biggest gates were for the relegation game v Dundee United (20,124) and the play-off v Dunfermline (19,387).

Thanks everyone. Along with David I am someone who does not like even numbers ;-). I, therefore, contacted AFC to get more detailed info regarding the Scott testimonial; response still outstanding.

Interesting to note that the upcoming game against Rangers this weekend is sold out already.

Be interesting to see what the figure is. I'm not sure if by 'sold out' they refer to the whole ground or the home support only. Have Rangers sold their allocation? And do they get more than they would have in the 1990s?

The biggest 21st century gate for this fixture is 19,028 on 7/8/04 - the opening day of the 04-05 season. More than that would be a good sign for the Dons that their fans are starting to believe they can maintain their challenge for 2nd.

Here are the last 20,000+ figures for Aberdeen home league games with opponent, crowd & season. Where there has never been a 20,000 gate I've put the best figure for the fixture in brackets. No mention of a team means no league fixtures against them

Airdrieonians (18,000) 47-48, 55-56
Albion Rovers (14,500) 36-37
Alloa (11,000) 22-23
Arbroath (19,000) 38-39
Ayr United (16,000) 20-21, 21-22
Celtic 20,422 91-92
Clyde 23,000 48-49

Cowdenbeath (18,000) 31-32
Dumbarton (13,167) 84-85
Dundee 23,000 60-61
Dundee United 20,124 94-95

Dunfermline (19,498) 87-88
East Fife 24,000 51-52
East Stirling (10,000) 32-33
Falkirk 20,000 50-51
Hamilton 20,000 35-36
Hearts 20,216 85-86
Hibernian 23,080 82-83

Inverness CT (18,250) 04-05
Kilmarnock (19,032) 70-71
Livingston (15,744) 01-02
Morton 20,000 48-49
Motherwell 22,000 54-55
Partick Thistle 20,173 71-72
QOS 27,000 53-54

Queen's Park (17,000) 36-37
Raith Rovers 20,000 52-53
Rangers 20,351 95-96
St Johnstone 25,084 71-72
St Mirren 20,000 52-53
Stirling Albion 23,000 55-56

Abercorn (2,000) 1904-05
Arthurlie (3,000) 1904-05
Bo'ness (9,000) 27-28
Clydebank (1st) (14,000) 23-24
Clydebank (2nd) (11,399) 85-86
Leith Athletic (15,000) 30-31
Port Glasgow Athletic (7,000) 07-08, 08-09
St Bernard's (3,000) 1904-05
Third Lanark 20,000 48-49

A rough rule of thumb to estimated figures here is that any figure saying 20,000 may actually be below that number but 21,000 or 22,000 is likely to have been over 20,000

The figure for Kilmarnock would have been one fewer had it not been for a bakers strike in the West of Scotland. My mother only gave me permission to go to that match if I brought back some bread from Aberdeen,

Alas, not even the presence of five loaves and two fish suppers in my possession could avoid a three-goal defeat!

Impressive list!

Against the background of the "sold-out" hype for this weekend, it will indeed be interesting to see what the actual attendance will be.

Just got the answer from the Club:

"The attendance given for the Man Utd game was 22,000 as it was an all ticket sell out.
The Scotsman are a bit wrong with their info and figures
Regards"

22,000... David, I take it you did not need to organise bread that day. Otherwise, it would look a bit silly: 22,001...

Matt, the biggest miracle has nothing to do with loaves and fishes, it's the fact that you received an answer from Aberdeen FC! Can you PM me with details? I've been trying to get responses from Pittodrie for some time.

Here are the numbers of 20,000+ gates at Pittodrie post-1961 (i.e. the period for which official figures are available). Breakdown is by club, number of 20,000+ gates, highest and season in which highest was recorded. If a club is not mentioned then either they have not played at Aberdeen in a league match since 1961 or no crowd has topped 20,000

Celtic 34 36,000 70-71
Dundee United 6 24,208 77-78
Hearts 2 20,702 71-72
Hibernian 2 25,385 71-72
Partick Thistle 1 20,173 71-72
Rangers 38 37,750 62-63
St Johnstone 1 25,804 71-72
