The British transfer record

Post by Carlucci » Sun Jan 07, 2007 7:19 pm

Could any of you give us information about the British transfer record? Could you tell us the holders over the years, the amount of money payed, and the buyer clubs and those ones that sent the players? Thank you much. Cheers

Between us, David & I have made up a list of Scottish record transfers as far as we can and I append below our best endeavours. There are obviously gaps and errors so, can anyone help fill them in and correct mistakes?

Syd Puddefoot - West Ham Utd. to Falkirk February 1922 £5,000

Billy Steel - Derby County to Dundee September 1950 £17,500
Jim Baxter - Raith Rovers to Rangers June 1960 £18,000
George McLean - St.Mirren to Rangers January 1963 £26,500
Charlie Cooke - Dundee to Aberdeen December 1964 £44,000
Dave Smith - Aberdeen to Rangers August 1966
Alex Smith - Dunfermline Ath. to Rangers August 1966
Andy Penman - Dundee to Rangers April 1967 (£35,000 + G.McLean) approx. £55,000

Davie Provan - Kilmarnock to Celtic October 1978 £125,000
Frank McGarvey - Liverpool to Celtic March 1980 £275,000
Maurice Johnstone - Watford to Celtic November 1984 £400,000
Chris Wood - Norwich City to Rangers July 1986 £600,000
Terry Butcher - Ipswich Town to Rangers August 1986 £725,000
Richard Gough - Tottenham Hotspur to Rangers October 1987 £M1.1
Trevor Steven - Everton to Rangers June 1989 £M1.5
Alexei Mikhailitchenko Sampdoria to Rangers July 1991 £M2.2
Duncan Ferguson - Dundee Utd. to Rangers July 1993 £M3.5
Paul Gascoigne - Lazio to Rangers July 1995 £M4.3
Arthur Numan - Eindhoven to Rangers June 1998 £M5
Giovanni van Bronckhorst - Feyenoord to Rangers July 1998 £M5.25
Andrei Kanchelskis - Fiorentina to Rangers July 1998 £M5.5
Eyel Berkovic - West Ham Utd. to Celtic July 1999 £5.75

One wonders what the reaction would be now if the world record transfer captained his team to immediate relegation and defeat in the FA Cup Final within a few months of the transfer (as McMullan did).

Especially if he had been transferred from Partick Thistle

Transfer fees records are always open to various interpretations - particularly in earlier times. McMullan is a case in point. The Wikipedia entry for McMullan quotes the fee as £4,700, not £8,000. Given that his transfer doesn't appear as one of the top transfers in contemporary editions of the Athletic News Annual I would suggest that the lower figure is more accurate.

However, another Thistle player - Jimmy Gibson - is a more likely contender as a record transfer. He moved to Aston Villa in April 1927 for around £7,500 and there are several Villa sources which claim this to be a British record.

One notable omission from the first Wikipedia link is Jimmy Greaves transfer to Spurs from Milan in 1961 which was for a British record £99,999 - manager Bill Nicholson not wanting to saddle Graves with the pressure of the first British £100,000 fee.

An old Athletic News Annual has the following (further steps in the Scottish transfer ladder): Jock Simpson(Falkirk) to Blackburn Rovers January 1911 for £1,800 & Tom Logan(Falkirk) to Chelsea 1913 £2,500. It also states that Percy Dawson moved from Hearts to Blackburn in February 1914 for £2,300 NOT £2,500. Logan`s transfer would have been a World record because Derby`s Horace Barnes is next in line for a £2,500 move when he shifted to Manchester City for that amount in May 1914.

PRECY DAWSON

Post by Jim Boyce » Sat Mar 10, 2007 12:06 pm

Was this Precy Dawson an Englishman? No sign of being capped for Scotland despite the record transfer and scoring record refelcting his undoubted ability.

iS IT PRECY OR PERCY?

Another one for the list: Eamonn Bannon, Chelsea to Dundee United for ₤165,000, October 1979. Must have brought Wee Jim out in a cold sweat.

Note on transfers - John Simpson took so long to move down South because according to the Falkirk Herald he was paid more by Falkirk FC than the max wage in England, according to the Falkirk Herald he was the highest paid player in Scotland [summer 1910] I do not know if this true, it is reportage.
