From Colin Hynds

Q Could you name the players to have scored in the Scottish Cup Final direct from free kicks, prior to the Celtic v Dundee Utd final in 1985?

Does anyone have this information? I'm sure it's answerable but the time involved in researching Finals from 1874-1984 is prohibitive (for me at the moment anyway). If someone has already done this could they please post the answer here? Thanks.

If memory serves I'm sure Archie MacPherson said prior to Davie Provan stepping up to take that kick that no one had ever scored direct from a free-kick in a Scottish Cup final before.

From this article in The Scotsman
With 14 minutes remaining, Davie Provan scored the first direct free-kick in Scottish Cup final history when he curled the ball beyond Hamish McAlpine after Eamonn Bannon had needlessly fouled Murdo MacLeod on the edge of the United penalty area.

What does Archie McPhearsome know about football?!!! There have been at least four Scottish Cup Final goals scored from free kicks - Bobby Walker for Hearts vs. Hibs in 1896, Alex Gourley`s winner for Morton vs. Rangers 1922, Jimmy Whyte`s Morton equaliser vs. Rangers in the 1948 1st game & Davy Provan`s in 1985.

Memory didn't serve correctly. MacPherson actually said "Only twice in the history of the Scottish Cup, have goals been scored direct from a free kick." Though his research obviously wasn't as thorough as yours LEATHERSTOCKING.

Dunno what The Scotsman's excuse is.

Davie Provan's goal (and Archie's commentary) here.
