Oldest Clubs in order?

Post by Sat31March1928 » Thu Aug 04, 2005 6:49 am

I've been asked the following

"Q. Where do Heart of Midlothian rank in terms of being one of the World's oldest Professional football clubs?

I know Notts County were formed 12 years before us, but surely we must make a top 20 or so?

I can't sleep at nights not knowing!!!"

I replied

I don't know but I know a man who might.

Your question is probably better worded as

'of current senior football clubs what are the oldest'.

Hearts were kicked out of the Scottish Cup for being 'Professional' in 1884

Clydesdale (Glasgow)
Dumbarton

It's not an exact science as there is a lot of confusion over when precisely some clubs were formed. There's also the question of some minor clubs like Sheffield FC which claims to be world's oldest still in existence (formed 1855) and Maidenhead & Marlow who have played the FA Cup since 1871-72.

Taking your suggestion of CURRENT & SENIOR clubs then Hearts do make the top 20 as I make thirteen clubs founded before them and seven in the same year. I list the usually accepted dates of foundation with an explanation in brackets in cases where there are doubts)

1862 Notts County (suggestions they may have been formed as late as 1864)
1863 Stoke City (suggestions this might have been as late as 1868)
1865 Nottingham Forest
1866 Chesterfield
1867 Queen's Park
1867 Sheffield Wednesday
1869 Kilmarnock
1870 Rotherham United (as Rotherham, eventually becoming Rotherham Utd in 1925 following mergers)
1870 Stranraer
1871 Reading
1872 Dumbarton
1872 Wrexham
1873 Rangers (suggestions this may have been 1872)
1874 Aston Villa
1874 Bolton Wanderers
1874 Hamilton Accies
1874 HEARTS
1874 Macclesfield Town
1874 Morton
1874 Northwich Victoria

There was a Crystal Palace club formed in 1861 but it's not the same as the current one. Similarly there were clubs established in places like Ayr, Darlington, Lincoln, Preston & Shrewsbury before 1874 (all of which support senior teams today) but they aren't the same as the current ones though a case could be argued for Ayr United and Preston North End as having evolved from these earlier clubs.

Oldest Irish club -north or south - is Cliftonville (1879) and the oldest continental Boldklub of Copenhagen (1876). There was a Buenos Aires FC formed in 1865 or 1867 but they are long since gone. Oldest South American clubs are the Argentinian pair of Quilmes & Gimnasia y Esgrima, both formed in 1887.

Similarly there were clubs in Africa and Asia in the 19th century (Pietermaritsburg Country, 1879 and Shanghai, 1887) long defunct.

The RSSSF have a page with foundation dates for many countries but it's by no means an exhaustive list.

Finally to clear one thing up which bugs a lot of people. TSV Munich 1860 were indeed formed in 1860 but as a gymnastics club. They didn't start a football section until 1899, long after other German clubs were established.

I have images in my head of Notts County getting formed and then sitting on a pitch twiddling their thumbs until the next team was formed. When were Notts Forest formed?

I should have thought of that.

Couldn't move for them last week. Two on the train last Friday talking to each other but no mention of fitba until one of their phones started ringing with a follow follow ringtone then they spent the next two hours as if they were best friends from way back.

I had to go to Ayr on Monday and it was like being in Ibrox-on-sea.

Glad I anticipated the Munich 1860 query on the Hearts site.

I notice East Kilbride FC have just launched themselves into the Top 20, showing 1871 on their club badge, despite their website advising they were formed around 2010. Is this stretching things a bit far?

Tsk, Bobby - there's no such club as NOTTS Forest...

Nottingham Forest are third in David's list above - 1865. Presumably County played against since-defunct cricket clubs and the like until the cup and league got going.

Penicuik Athletic show 1888 on their badge, despite only reforming about 12 years ago and even if you stretch it a little, the current club can only trace it's roots back to 1951 at best.

Queen`s Park, formed in July 1867, was not the first Scottish football club. The Edinburgh Foot-ball Club started in 1824 and played a basic form of the game until at least the 1840s, Edinburgh Academicals & Edinburgh University both kicked off in 1857, West of Scotland in 1865, both Royal High School and Edinburgh Wanderers in 1867 and Glasgow Academicals, Merchistonians & St.Andrews University were all playing by the time Queen`s set up shop on the South Side Recreation Ground at Mount Florida. Queen`s appear however to have been the sole eschewers of the handling style in favour of dribbling the ball. There must have been others now long forgotten. Up to the early 1870s, the difference in the game played by the handlers & the dribblers was minimal and many players were adept at both and flitted easily between codes.
