Does anyone know if John Harley who was born in Glasgow in 1886 and moved to Argentina in 1906 played for any team of significance in Scotland before moving.
Found details about him on a Penarol website "http://www.carbonero.com/index.php/Idol ... harley.htm"(translated by google).
He apparently transformed the game in Uruguay by introducing the short passing Scottish style as opposed to the English long ball game and seems to have been a bit of a hero there although I have never seen his name mentioned before.

He was probably too young when he moved to Argentina to have played at a significant level in Scotland. Many Scots played a part in the growth of football in South America - the first Argentine title was won by St Andrew's against Old Caledonians. Men like Alexander Watson Hutton and Alec Lamont led the way. Archie McLean was a great pioneer of football in Brazil whose obituary said he hailed from "Paisley, Glasgow, near London."
