Danger here! World Cup Guff-blog

Post by the hibLOG » Wed Jun 14, 2006 3:31 pm

Talking of Hansen and chums, you may be amused by www.dangerhere.com, a veritable shrine to the guff that comes out of football commentators and pundits. It's an Irish site so there's a lot of stuff about RTE's George Hamilton, Johnny Giles, Eamonn Dunphy, Liam Brady et al, but that doesn't make it any less funny. Plenty of Motty and Lawro and the rest of them.

Also handy archive section on the correct grammatical constructions of Ronglish (spotters badge, early doors, full gun, lollipop, etc).

After a few days away in a fitba-free, internet-free, mobile phone-free backwater (otherwise known as the Lake District) I come back to watch what was definitely total guff in the shape of England v Trinidad & Tobago.

So far, and I admit I`ve watched about an hour in total to date, the Weltmeisterschaft & the South British media are the footie equivalent of pot noodles.

I hope you've added the first 45 minutes of Argentina-Serbia to that total.

Ach, come oan. The sooner this pile of doggy doodah`s over & we can get back to the real thing - Fumbleball, Hit the Goalie/Corner Flag, Shire vs. The Wee Rovers, cold pies & lukewarm beef cube solution on finger numbing January afternoons - the better. Only a few weeks to go & the Wee Red Book`ll herald the start of footieasweknow it.

I'll bet the Huns were in a right quandary tonight with Gattuso on one side and Reyna on the other. Not to mention Pope playing for the Yanks and Italy now being run by a Prodi. :)

There were a couple of contenders for that blog in the latest commentaries. Peter Drury on Italy-USA when the Americans netted (and before it was ruled out for offside) screamed "that's the equaliser."

It was already 1-1 at the time.

Then the worst of them all - "Ivy" Tyldesley at the Ghana- Czech match - started talking about the Czechs as "The Poles."

That was before this most anglocentric of wafflers described a shot by Michael Essien and save by Petr Cech as 'Chelsea v Chelsea.'

This is an absolute gem. I switched on Japan v Croatia (or Celtic v Rangers in commentator-speak) after about 20 minutes play just to see if there had been any score.

The first words I heard coming out of Peter Drury's mouth (I say mouth though it could well have been another orifice) were "The referee was born in July 1966, a great month for football."

You think that's bad. You should have heard Kevin Gallacher on Five Live last night. It was Sven this, Wayne that. Crawler! His co-commentator was dreadful too. Kept going on about how he had to go to A&E with a cut thumb and not being able to speak German. Beats me how wome people think the radio commentary is better than the TV.

Having said that there has to be some sort of award for Jonathan Pearce tonight for this brammer. "He's the only player at these finals who was alive in 1966 - when England won the World Cup."

"Ivy" Tyldesley was on form again tonight - "Incidentally, England won their group in 1966."

Incidentally, my arse. He'd been bursting to get that out.
