Many apologies to those of you who have read a similar thread on another forum, but I was wondering if anyone can add to this list of Scottish league games where eight or more goals have been scored before half-time or where one side has scored seven times before the break. Does anyone have accurate dates for the games at Motherwell and at Morton? Is the Motherwell-Dumbarton game the only League match in England or Scotland that has featured ten first-half goals? All ideas welcomed! Thank you.
8.12.1894 Airdrieonians (7)15 Dundee Wanderers (0)1
2.1.1930 King’s Park (7)12 Forfar Athletic (0)2
53-54 Motherwell (6)6 Dumbarton (4)6
18.4.1959 Dunfermline Athletic (7)10 Partick Thistle (0)1
62-63 Morton (7)8 Forfar Athletic (2)2
26.1.2002 Queen of the South (6)6 Morton (3)5 |

Hi there and welcome to the forum.
The Motherwell match was Apr 10th 1954 and Morton was Oct 27th 1962. l don't know about more examples of the sort you're looking for but I think it likely there are more than listed here. |

| Many thanks for the welcome and thanks for the dates. I have a list of 23 matches in the English League which fit the description, so I have no doubt there are many more around the Scottish Leagues. Thanks, Alan, for the Clyde-East Fife game. I hope others will also surface! |

Slightly off topic, but Aberdeen have twice scored eight in the second half of a match, both Scottish League Cup ties.
13 September 1947, Aberdeen (1) 9, Queen of the South 0.
20 September 1972, Aberdeen (0) 8, Falkirk 0.
(sorry John - but you can always take consolation in Falkirk being 9-0 up after 33 minutes against Maccabi in 1957, final score 10-1)
Which begs the question, in big scores, do teams tend to score most goals in the first half or second half? |

| I think the answer to the question is that, in big scores, many more goals are scored after half-time. There seem to be lots of occasions when a team has, for instance, scored twelve goals and been 3-0 or 4-0 ahead at half-time. All too often, when a team has six or seven before the break, they dry up in the second-half. It is rare to see a side score six times in each half. |

| When England sneaked a 3-9 win vs. Scotland @ Wembley in April 1961, they were 0-3 up @ half time. |

Interesting subject.
I was actually at the Clyde v East Fife game mentioned above, where Clyde scored all their goals in 25 minutes, IIRC.
I also have a note that the Bathgate v Clyde game on 20th March 1926 was another where Clyde led 6-2 at half time, this time the full time score was 7-3 to Clyde. |

| I notice that Luton Town were 7-0 up at half time in the Blue Square Premier today. |

On 1 Mar 1890 in a Glasgow Clothing Cup match, Belmont and Rosevale were drawing 2-2 at half-time. After the break Belmont thumped in 9 goals to take the tie 11-2. This was a Dundee Junior competition, the Glasgow Clothing Company donating the trophy.
And in the same competition on 24 Jan 1891, Johnstone Athletic were losing 6-0 v Whitefield, before storming back and taking the tie with 7 second half goals. |
