Gordon Robinson (Motherwell)

Post by soccerhistory » Mon Mar 29, 2010 8:53 pm

According to The Men Who Made Motherwell Football Club, a player named Gordon Robinson made one single appearance for Motherwell in the 1951-52 season. However, my version of John Litster's disk says he also payed 6 League (3 goals) and 2 Scottish Cup appearances the following season. I'd welcome opinions on which of these is correct.

Which version of the disk do you have? Version 4 (the latest) had one league appearance for 51-52 and six with three goals for 52-53 as well as the two Scottish Cup appearances. There is a signing date of 8/12/51 from Sheffield United, freed 30/4/53 and signed for Bury on 16/5/53.

Sunday Chronicle annuals for both seasons agree with the above and in both instances the total appearances and goals for the season are correct.

Version 3 also has the same details as Version 4. However, the Who's Who book states "A single outing ... was Gordon's sole contribution to the history of Motherwell." Are there line-ups in the Yore Publications work and what do they say?

There are post-war line-ups in the Yore book but I wouldn't always trust them.

In the Summary on page 164: 7 league games 3 goals , 2 SC games

1951-52 (page 206) 1 league game (vs Raith, contradicting The Men who made Motherwell)
1952-53 (page 208) 8 league games 2 goals 1 SC game 1 goal (apparently he managed to score in the replay against Aberdeen despite not being in the line-up...)

Sorry, I thought you were suggesting Litster had 6 apps for 51-52 and 0+ 2 SC for 52-53.

You have Litster & contemporary annuals agreeing plus the Motherwell history (though that differs on the number of appearances) all saying he was there in 1952-53 with only one source suggesting otherwise. The balance of evidence is quite strong.

BTW the scorer in the cup replay was Johnny Aitkenhead
