Scottish Cup Result Discrepencies
Re: Scottish Cup Result Discrepencies
Sorry, was working from my memory
not quite as I said it

close, "the forwards, whose strength was somewhat increased by an influx of members from the defunct Heart of Midlothian"
Of course the report might be wrong about them being an Edinburgh side!

Re: Scottish Cup Result Discrepencies
Hard to say really but the report seems fairly unequvocable on St.Andrews being an "Edinburgh" team but I have no record of a club of that name in the city at that time so perhaps their stay on the World stage was brief - the single Cup tie only? Hearts were drawn to play Dunfermline in the 1st Round that season(but scratched) so they too in all probability had paid their SFA subscription in late summer 1876 having been defunct for a few weeks.

The Herald from 24th Oct 1888 has the 4th round drawscottish wrote:Portland and St Andrew's were both Kilmarnock sides. Woodvale were drawn at home against 1st Renfrew RV in the second round but scratched. Glasgow University lost 4-0 away to Uddington Nov 3rd 1888.

No Glasgow University in it.
Uddingston vs Mossend Swifts
Swifts winning 4-1

There are other results for St Andrews in the Scotsman for 6/5/1876 v Hearts (return match),14/10/1876 V Swifts (EFA Cup), 21/10/1876 v St Clements (Scottish Cup 2nd Round), 28/10/1876 v Hibs & 4/11/1876 v Hanover.LEATHERSTOCKING wrote:Hard to say really but the report seems fairly unequvocable on St.Andrews being an "Edinburgh" team but I have no record of a club of that name in the city at that time so perhaps their stay on the World stage was brief - the single Cup tie only? There is no further mention of them and then Hearts re-emerge in January 1877 which seems to support the theory of the Hearts St Andrews takeover/merger.

Re: Scottish Cup Result Discrepencies
Thanks for that PJ. Hearts and St.Andrews both entered the 1876-77 competition so both must have been SFA members in September 1876 & at the time of the Cup`s 1st Round draw because Hearts were down to meet Dunfermline in the 1st Round with all ties due to be played on 30th September. Hearts scratched but must have still been in existance then otherwise the SFA annual would have descibed them as being dissolved. Were they in hibernation(excuse pun) or actually defunct until reappearing in the press in January 1877?

Some interesting stuff which may or may not be true. I know speaking to David Speed that a lot of the history pre 1883 (earliest club documents) is based on recollection and newspaper reports.

Additional information regarding St.Andrew`s FC. St.Andrew`s(note the apostrophy "s") & Hearts were both registered for 1876-77 season but only Hearts were for the following season. Both clubs are noted as playing on the Meadows. St.Andrew`s & St.Clement`s(Dundee) drew their 2nd Round tie 1-1 but St.Andrew`s then withdrew because of a disputed goal and St.Clement`s were awarded a walk over to the 3rd Round.
