YOUNGEST PLAYER?

Post by sam peckinpah » Sat Apr 27, 2013 4:59 pm

Jordan Allan (14) made a substitute appearance for Airdrie today. Not sure if that's a Scottish League record, can anyone confirm? I think Hamilton Accies had a 14 year old on the bench recently but I don't know if he actually came on. I think Ronnie Simpson might have made an appearance for Queen's Park as a 14 year old, but not sure that was a Scottish League match.

Ronnie Simpson first played for QP in the Southern League Cup during WWII if my memory serves me correctly

Born 11/10/1930, Ronnie Simpson Made his debut for QP on June 2nd 1945, aged 14 years and 304 days, in the second leg of a Summer Cup tie against Clyde.

He played one match in the following round against Morton a fortnight later, and made his SFL debut on August 11th 1945 in a 3-2 defeat to Kilmarnock, so he was still 14 when he made his "official" debut. He went on to make a total of ten league appearances that season, sharing the goalkeeping duties with Bobby Brown.

Made a total of 122 appearances for QP through to the end of the 1949/50 season.

I meant to say the Summer Cup instead of the Southern League Cup [I didn't but am trying to save face ...]

by way of crowbarring something into a conversation, the youngest Falkirk player I know of was William Lees [debut Saturday October 29th 1892 v Grangemouth (H) Stirlingshire Cup 1st Rd] who was about 15 when he played [listed in the census as born in Learmouth, Lanarkshire 1877]

Does anyone have a date of birth of Jordan Allan? Difficult to say what records he has set without an exact age. But, on the face of it, by far the youngest senior player.

John - as for William Lees, there is no such place as Learmouth so this might be a mis-reading for Carnwath. If so, his date of birth was 28 April 1877, parents Alexander and Elizabeth.

His uncle [who also played for the club, and lived in the same house was from Carnwath, so you are probably correct]

Not knowing the area I did not want to say

A few ideas in no particular order (also worth checking, as I'm not 100% sure how accurate these claims all are):

Andy Penman, born 20.2.43, played for Dundee 7.2.59, aged 15y 352d
Sam McMillan, born 14.8.37, played for Ayr Utd 14.3.53, aged 15y 212d
Sean Christie (date of birth?) played for Forfar v Berwick 25.11.95, allegedly aged 15y 132d
James Hamilton, born 12.11.90, played in Hamilton A v Queen of the South 30.9.06, aged 15y 323d
Ronnie Simpson - as above
Mark Shankland, born 11.7.95, played for Ayr Utd at Brechin 7.5.11, aged 15y 300d
Stevie May, born 2.11.92, scored for St Johnstone v Airdrie Utd, 11.5.09, aged 16y 191d
Islam Feruz, born 10.9.95, palyed for Scotland U21 v Italy U21 25.4.12, aged 16y 197d

There are bound to be many more. I have put together, over the years, a list of 39 players in the English League prior to their 16th birthday.

Today's "Sun" (yes I know, it's the Sun) says he was 14yrs and 199 days old on Saturday so I presume Robert Martin, who wrote the report, must have asked.

I will leave it to somebody else to work out what that would make his actual date of birth to be.

Colin Paterson has interviewed him for the local paper following his debut. Date of birth is actually October 20th 1998 and he played at 14 years and 189 days, not 199 days as the Sun originally claimed.

I know Colin and he's spoken to the boy directly so he'll have got the correct date.
