Division Two 1914/15

Post by Alan Brown » Fri Oct 11, 2013 2:59 pm

I was wondering if any of you guys could point me in the direction of anyone that has researched any of the following division two clubs for season 1914/15:
Abercorn, Albion Rovers, Arthurlie, Clydebank, Cowdenbeath, Dunfermline Athletic, East Stirlingshire, Johnstone, Leith Athletic, Lochgelly United, Vale of Leven.
I would be looking for the line-ups and goalscorers. For anyone who has a subscription, would the British Newspaper Archive be of any use for this research?

If anyone can offer any advice I would really appreciate it.

I have some lineups for some Cowdenbeath, Dunfermline Athletic and Lochgelly United games for the period Aug-Nov taken from the West fife Echo. I'll post what I have. I will be going through the same paper for the rest of that season next week.

I'm not sure the BNA would be that helpful, Alan. Unless local papers for that time are available. The Sunday Post was a new paper then, only having started to be published the previous year. But their football coverage was restricted to a page in which they covered top Scottish and English games. All they have for the Second Division are the results. Even the top flight reports don't carry line-ups.

There's always the Scottish Referee of course (oh for that to be in the BNA) but it ceased publication in November 1914. IIRC the Mitchell has a more or less full set, though some are on microfiche. Or at least they were. It's been eight years since I was last there.

I'll ask Drummond & Tad, they are the "go to people" for 'Shire history [you can ask Tad yourself on twitter if you want], they are always helpful to me, but then again the crossover of personnel etc between FFC & ESFC means I also share a lot with them.

Thanks for the replies. I will check out what they have at the Mitchell, then perhaps plan a trip to the National Library in Edinburgh.
