Debut hat-tricks
Debut hat-tricks
Kenny Deuchar grabbed a hat-trick for Livingston on his debut against East Fife on Tuesday. It's unprecedented in the history of Livingston and Meadowbank Thistle.
Does anyone know of any other players to have achieved this feat? I am guessing an Old Firm player or two may have done it, possibly quite recently, but it would be interesting to see if there's a few others.

Re: Debut hat-tricks
Whilst not an everyday occurrence I'm quite sure that it's not that unusual. One example which springs to my mind is Sandy Graham of Kilmarnock scoring all three in a 3-1 league win away to Hearts in January 1905 to give Killie their first ever win at Tynecastle and end a 20-match run of failing to win away from home which stretched back fifteen months. Graham had been signed from Clydebank Juniors less than a month beforehand.

Re: Debut hat-tricks
I know this is a thread about Scottish football, but Bristol Rovers have three players who have scored a debut League hat-trick:
Joe Riley, Rovers 4 Bournemouth 1, 2 Jan 1932
Jimmy McCambridge, Bristol C 0 Rovers 3, 26 Aug 1933
Bobby Gould, Rovers 4 Blackburn R 1, 15 Oct 1977
For obvious reasons, McCambridge's hat-trick of headers at Ashton Gate was clearly the most satisfying. Gould's three came a week before the demoralising 9-0 catastrophe at Spurs. I would imagine that most clubs with a century or so of League membership may have a similar number of hat-trick debutants, and that goes for clubs north or south of the border.

Re: Debut hat-tricks
Four Dunfermline players scored hat-tricks on their debuts;
Jimmy Weir scored four as a trialist in a 6-1 win v Forfar on 20.8.32.
Dougie Wallace also got four in a 4-0 Supplementary Cup win v Ayr on 21.8.46.
Bobby Gallacher, 5-2 v Stenhousemuir on 6.3.48.
Jimmy Muir, 0-5 at Arbroath (LC) on 9.8.52 (against the club which released him at the end of the previous season!)
Roland Robertson may also have done so in a 5-3 defeat at Airdrie on 14.8.37. He scored twice but I'm missing the other scorer.

Re: Debut hat-tricks
Graeme Eaglesham did it earlier this season for Queen's Park against Livingston in the Challenge Cup, Queen's winning 3-2 after extra time.
The redoubtable Malky Mackay (Senior) went one better than this on his debut against Queen of the South on 29/09/62, scoring all four for Queen's Park in a 4-4 draw in the League Cup.
He followed this up two days later in a 5-4 defeat at East Fife (again in the League Cup) by scoring three times. He almost made it three hat-tricks in his first three games, but fell short in the following game at Dumbarton on 08/09/62 when he scored "just" two goals as Queen's won 2-1.

Re: Debut hat-tricks
Kris Boyd scored a hat-trick on his Rangers debut versus Peterhead in the third round of the Scottish Cup on the 7th January 2006. I mind it cos I happened to be at that game.
Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick for Manchester United on his debut against Fenerbahçe in the Champions League on 28th September 2004.
Doing a bit of research now, Fabrizio Ravanelli got a hat-trick on his Middlesbrough debut against Liverpool on the opening day of the 96-97 season.

Re: Debut hat-tricks
Gordon Smith, the great one, scored a debut hat trick for Hibs against Hearts in 1941.
Colin Stein left Hibs and scored a hat trick on his Rangers debut in 1968.

Re: Debut hat-tricks
Stein scored hat-tricks in his first two games for Rangers - away to Arbroath and home to Hibs in the league and nearly added a third when scoring twice v Dundalk in the Fairs Cup in his third game.bobby s wrote:Colin Stein left Hibs and scored a hat trick on his Rangers debut in 1968.
Re: Debut hat-tricks
Didier Agathe scored a hat-trick for Raith Rovers in a 4-1 win over Airdrie on August 28, 1999.
David Ferrer hit a debut hat-trick for Motherwell as they beat Hibs 4-0 on February 9, 2002. And then never scored again for them.
Owen Coyle definitely scored a hat-trick for Airdrie on his debut in 1990.
Improbably, Filip Sebo scored a hat-trick on his international debut for Slovakia against Malta on August 15, 2006.
Alan Shearer scored a debut hat-trick for Southampton against Arsenal on April 9, 1988.

Re: Debut hat-tricks
Of course Jim Dyet scored 8! On January 2, 1930, he made his debut for Kings Park against Forfar Athletic in the Scottish League Division Two. Kings Park won 12-2.

Peter Cunningham scored all four on his debut for Clyde against Airdrie on the 5th of October 1929. Final score Airdrie 2 Clyde 4.
