Comprehensive List of Matches at Hampden?

Post by HibeeJibee » Mon Dec 09, 2013 11:33 pm

Years ago I came across a website which (purportedly) listed every football game ever played at the old Wembley. I came across a dud link to it on another website earlier, and though it's now defunct the old pages are preserved on the WebArchive.

(1923-1959) https://web.archive.org/web/20120602092 ... mbley0.htm
(1960-1969) https://web.archive.org/web/20120602092 ... mbley1.htm
(1970-2000) https://web.archive.org/web/20120602092 ... mbley2.htm

Touching on scottish's thread about its attendances: is there such a list for Hampden? Obviously there'd be a large number of Queen's Park club matches each season which Wembley didn't have, but also the smatterring of representative matches, national finals etc. and no doubt various 'interesting oddities' too.

There's also the excellent 'Wembley' by Glenn Isherwood which lists all matches up to 1999. There's also a chapter at the back on other events held there. Naturally for Hampden there's the centenary book written by Forrest Robertson and myself which also covered the myriad different events held there (top attendance within the stadium's perimeter? Boy's Brigade Conventicle 1933. 130,000 inside and over 100,000 outside).

But yes, because of Queen's Park for a start there would be many more games than Wembley. Also, it's only recently that Wembley has been used as a semi-final venue for major competitions.

Here's what I have, bearing in mind that Amateur Cup, Police, Juvenile etc are not included. See also here: http://scottishleague.net/forum/viewtop ... f=2&t=4215

235 full Scotland internationals
10 unofficial Scotland internationals, including WW2
4 U-23 matches (three internationals, one v West German Olympic XI)
1 U-21 international
1 GB v FIFA
1 Ibrox Disaster Benefit Match
12 Scottish League representative matches
1 Queen's Jubilee match
104 Scottish Cup Finals & replays
133 Scottish Cup semi-finals & replays
104 Queen's Park Scottish Cup ties and replays
11 'Other' Scottish Cup ties and replays
64 League Cup Finals and replays
72 League Cup semi-finals and replays
125 Queen's Park League Cup ties
13 'Other' League Cup ties
16 Queen's Park Challenge Cup ties
65 Junior Cup Finals and replays
12 Junior Cup semi-finals and replays
1 War Fund Shield (WW1)
2 Queen's Park Victory Cup ties (WW1)
1 B Division Supplementary Cup tie
4 Coronation Cup ties
3 St Mungo Cup ties
11 international club matches (3 European Cup Finals, 2 ECWC Finals, 1 UEFA Cup Final, 3 Celtic 'home' European Cup ties, one World Club Championship tie and one friendly to inaugurate the floodlights).
14 WW2 Cup Finals
35 'Other' wartime club games (chiefly semi-finals & Glaswegian competitions)
8 Olympic Games 2012 matches (five womens, three mens).
105 Glasgow Cup ties
103 Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup ties
5 Drybrough Cup Finals
105 Wartime Queen's Park league matches (includes 1945-46)
32 Wartime Queen's Park cup ties (includes 1945-46)
2 1939-40 Queen's Park league matches.
56 'Other' League matches

Thanks to qpsnapper the figure for Queen's Park league games at Hampden is 1,837. There are still a couple of issues outstanding but the number could well stay the same.

It would be mighty difficult to come up with a comprehensive list.

Queen's Park have also played "high profile" Reserve games at Hampden down the years.

Difficult to know where to draw the line with Friendlies. If the Rangers v Eintracht Floodlight opening gets in, then what about the Celtic v Tottenham game for QP's Centenary? Or Celtic v Man City a few years later? Or the 1999 game to open the new Hampden between a QP All Stars and a Celebrity XI? And if them, then maybe QP's public friendlies?

Does the Scotland U23 v Leeds United count? Maybe the games in the 1970 UEFA Youth Championship, the 1989 FIFA U16 World Cup?

Then there are the Scottish Amateur Cup Finals, West of Scotland Amateur Cup Final, SFA Youth Cup FInals, Glasgow v Bradford Schools games etc etc . . .

Can I add another wee anomaly to the list - the Queen's Park v Rugby Rovers game. In this definitely fun annual match, played on the big pitch at Hampden, a Queen's Park XI would play an XI comprised of rugby players from some of the top Glasgow clubs of the time: West of Scotland, Glasgow High School FP, Kelvinside Academicals, Glasgow Academicals, Hillhead HSFP and Jordanhill College.

The first hour of the game was played under normal football rules; however, the first time the ball went out of play after an hour, a rugby ball was thrown on and anything went.

This game bit the dust sometime in the early 1970s, as far as I am aware.

Also, I don't see the handful of rugby matches played on the ground listed.

Finally, anent the list of Wembley games mentioned on this thread.

Not many people know this, but, the actual final, final match played under Wembley's old twin towers was not the England v Germany game which is officially credited as "the last game", but a match between a Scottish Press XI and their English counterparts, which was played on the day before the bulldozers moved in to demolish the old ground.

The Scots won by the odd goal in nine or some such absurd figure; there was one full-scale punch-up - allegedly after Jim Duffy, playing for Scotland on the grounds he was writing a newspaper column at the time, sorted-out an English defender who had thought he was a combination of "Chopper" Harris and Norman Hunter - but, to their credit, the Scottish journos refrained from digging-up the turf or breaking the crossbars as they celebrated at the finish.

I think this just goes to show how hard (and time-consuming) it would be to compile a comprehensive list of Hampden matches. Another which springs to mind is the long-running Queen's Park-Corinthians fixture.

Re Wembley. I think that some time ago I calculated that the Scot with the most appearances there was Kenny Dalglish with 22 - 18 for Liverpool and 4 for Scotland.

Snuff: I was only looking at football matches but if you're looking at rugby then I reckon you'd have to include other sports as well. The SAAA Games were held at Hampden often in the 1920s and 1930s. Eric Liddell won three races in 1924 prior to his famous gold at the Paris Olympics that year. There was professional tennis in 1927 - forty years before it was permitted at Wimbledon - to see Suzanne Lenglen, the Serena Williams of her day. There was a Coronation athletics programme in 1937 and also a football match which saw Glasgow beat Edinburgh 2-0.

In the midst of war a world title fight was held with Jackie Paterson knocking out holder Peter Jane in 61 seconds of the opening round in a flyweight contest. There were more boxing matches up until 1949 when Paterson (by then no longer a title holder) lost a world bantamweight fight against holder Manuel Ortiz on points after ten rounds.

Hallowe'en 1942 brought the weir and wonderful sights of softball, baseball & American football. That was after a visit from the famous actor Edward G Robinson who was in the UK delivering a series of anti-fascist broadcasts for the BBC. Robinson, renowned for his tough guy roles, was the only person (with the possible exceptions of Humphrey Bogart & John Wayne) who could tell a Hampden crowd to, "Pipe down youse bums or youse are gonna get it." and leave the stadium safely.

Is that not a cue for something like that great Billy Connolly routine about the wrestler, "Ivan the Terrible" in the circus on Glasgow Green - surely some wee ynaff would have challenged Robinson to: "Come ower here if ye think you're hard enough".

scottish wrote:Finally, the one I find most difficulty to quantify - Queen's Park league matches. Their first was on October 31st 1903 and their last (for a while at any rate) November 23rd 2013. That's a straight 1870 games but of course they've played at Lesser Hampden a number of times. I have the Hampden figure as either 1850 or 1852 but might be well out on either. Advice would be appreciated.
I have the number of league games at Lesser Hampden as follows:
1974/75 - 4
1975/76 - 4
1977/78 - 2
1978/79 - 2
1979/80 - 1
1985/86 - 1
1992/93 - 1
1998/99 - 14

Also, Firhill was our "home" for the first leg of the Division Two Play Off Final in 2006/07 due to Hampden hosting the UEFA Cup Final a week later.

We've also played the Corinthian Casuals and Middlesex Wanderers at Hampden, and as well as the aforementioned reserve matches (Hearts and Dundee in 1987/88 spring to mind in our run to the Reserve League Cup Final) we also played a handful of Under 18 Glasgow Cup matches at Hampden whilst the South Stand was being rebuilt in the 97/98 season.

And if we're going to throw everything in, then there has been at least a couple of QP Coaches v QP Supporters matches on the hallowed turf!

Well, there's at least one which must have been played according to the true corinthian ethos of the game, with no brutality, rough play, dirty fouls or bad language spoiling the occasion.

Dougie Arnott was in the Miners` side in 1985. He was also a Junior Cup Final runner up. Actually one of the dirtiest and most brutal game was the 1983 Final between the polis & Coatbridge CC. In 1998, 19 year old Willie Collum sent off 3 West Kilbride players so not all Finals were purer than pure.

First of all the original post about Wembley stated football, not other sports, as Wembley has been used for speedway (like Hampden ), Grid Iron, Hockey and god knows what else so I'll stick to football. Games missed out of Wembley I have programmes for a series of School Internationals through the 1980s up to not long ago, as curtain raisers to the full International side, likewise the Scottish FA Youth Cup Finals between the various Youth organisations that were played before Scottish Internationals in the mid 1960s that we covered in a previous thread. Glasgow Schools rep matches against Bradford (of which I have a programme from 1967 with Mike Hewitt in goal and Danny McGrain at left Half ) London and Edinburgh plus Scottish, and Glasgow Schools Cup Finals . IIRC Most under age Glasgow Schools Cup Finals were played at Hampden apart from the (Under 18) Cameronian Cup which was played at Cathkin ,AFAIK this was because The 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers were one of the regiments that merged in the early 1900 from the Childers Reforms that formed the Cameronians.

Also there was a game in 1908 or I might be getting my figures crossed (possibly) 1980 when Rangers Supporters played Celtic Supporters, I'm sure it wasn't for the Charity Cup but for some unexplained reason the Glasgow Police charged onto the park and the proceedings had to be abandoned, I think it was jealousy as they were still in the Scottish Amateur League at the time.

As a side story on stadiums, Queen Elizabeth 2nd Stadium was built for the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth games, bowl shaped with a running track around it. It also had an enclosed No.2 ground behind one end of the stadium, much like Lesser Hampden, of which the club I played for had it as our home ground ,anyway we arranged an end of season bbq and a Kickaround (the players , wife's, friends etc ) un-official, nothing to do with the club we played for, rang the City Council and negotiated a fee for the ground, everybody happy to be rang back an hour later to be told we can have the whole stadium for $30 more, so the main stadium we had. Sadly the stadium is in the middle of demolition right now as it was extensively damaged in the February 2011 earthquakes.

Kenny Dalglish also played at Wembley in a curtain raiser to the 1988 Rous Cup , as well as Dalglish the Scottish team included his son Paul, Graeme Sounness Frank Gray, Danny McGrain and Rod Stewart, who thought he could play a bit and was an embarrassment with his showboating he thought he was up there, football wise, as his teammates.
