Old Firm 1979

Post by Vasco » Mon Jan 19, 2015 9:06 am

5th May 1979 Rangers v. Celtic Scottish Premier League at Hampden Park.

This is in my era, yet I cannot, for the life of me, remember why the match did not took place at Ibrox.

Enlighten me, please.

Indulge me a wee bit longer. Ibrox available for European Cup tie against Cologne in March and again for Cup Winners Cup against Lillestrom in August. What was being "reconstructed"?

The conversion to an all-seater stadium took place over a number of years. I don't know what precisely was being done at this time but both home games that season v Celtic were played at Hampden (11/11/78 being the other one). In both 1979-80 & 80-81 all league games (including four v Celtic) had attendances below 35,000. The completion (well, before the corners were filled in) of a 44,000 all-seated capacity stadium wasn't until the beginning of 1981-82. The official opening was against Liverpool in December 1981.

44,000 is given for all three European ties that season and reported as such so maybe that was the capacity but included terracing. It may be that the lower attendances for the subsequent Celtic games were as a result of police action. But I find the identical figure for the European Cup games is suspicious to say the least.

Bob Ferrier & Robert McElroy's "Rangers - The Complete Record" has this to say, "In August 1978 the removal of the entire east terracing began and a year later the Copland Road stand rose in its place, opened with a 2-2 match v Celtic. Next, the vast sweep of the west terracing went the same way, and in August 1980 Arsenal were the official guests in a 2-0 Rangers win."

Thanks, folks. Memory must be slipping.

I remember taking an old BlueNose friend of mine to the revamped stadium for the match against Cologne, Schumacher et al., at the start of 1982-83.

I'm surprised at how hard it seems to be to find any pictures on the web of Ibrox during reconstruction. You'd have thought it would have been an interesting sight at the time, and since for historical purposes, but virtually nothing to be found. Strange.

There is a substantial thread on another forum which contains photographs taken by supporters.

If I may be permitted to post a couple.
