UK Amateur Internationals

Postby BMCCOLL » Sun Aug 20, 2017 8:02 pm

After three months of further reviewing, we are in a position to provide the most complete record available of amateur internationals in the UK, in two versions.

The first version is an Excel spreadsheet and contains the full name and club of virtually every player who has been picked for international duty, including trial matches. The database also features a summary account of the matches themselves with goalscorers, results and dates.

The book edition, which will be more in depth, will also feature venues, attendances, goal times, referees and nearly all foreign opposition line-ups, will be available for purchase at a nominal price within the next few weeks. It will also include a myriad of illustrations including player pics and programme covers.
I will post further details on this at a later date.

UK AMATEUR INTERNATIONALISTS DATABASE

I'd like to take this chance to thank everyone who has submitted info to this project, with special thanks to John Treleven, Graham Frosten and of course Douglas Gorman, who compiled the spreadsheet from the original material.

The printed edition of the Amateur International Project, UK Amateur International Football - The Complete Record 1901-1974 is now available.
Running to 394 pages, this expands on the spreadsheet by including (where available) venues, attendances, goaltimes and referees and is extensively illustrated. It also lists foreign opposition details and Trial Matches and representative games are also included.
I have kept the price to the bare minimum of £10 (+P&P).
The book can be purchased from http://www.lulu.com/shop/brian-mccoll/uk-amateur-international-football/paperback/product-23434660.html

I've just received the book, and want to say what an impressive piece of work it is. Great value for a tenner! I ordered via Lulu and it took about a week to arrive.

A couple of production comments, which you might be able to fix. The front cover seems to have been uploaded at the wrong size, as it has a large white band round three sides and the title is perilously close to the spine. And quite a few photos are heavily pixellated, probably because they were reproduced from websites.

Inevitably, a couple of updates.

From the Austrian news archive, there is a report on the Slavia Prague v Amateur XI game on 8 November 1908:
http://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno?aid=ptb&datum=19081109&query=%22fussball%22&ref=anno-search&seite=5 (halfway down left column).
The script is hard to decipher, but I think it says that Slavia beat a scratch eleven 3-0, with goals from Beira, Jenif and a Main og.

There is also a brief report on the previous day's game (near foot of middle column): http://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno?aid=ptb&datum=19081108&query=%22fussball%22&ref=anno-search&seite=9 This says that the match was England against Slavia, but adds that the Sportsman newspaper had remarked that the team was not strong enough to be described as a full international side.

There is a detailed report of the England v Germany game on 21 September 1901 here:
http://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno?aid=ptb&datum=19010924&query=%22foster%22&ref=anno-search&seite=6

It gives the goalscorers as
1-0 Foster 8
2-0 Forster 10
3-0 Farnfield 14
4-0 Farnfield 40
5-0 Foster 43
Half time
6-0 GO Smith
7-0 Foster (one minute later)
8-0 Foster
9-0 Ryder (a few minutes later)
10-0 Foster
11-0 Foster
12-0 Hales

The German player without an initial is spelled Gruschwitz, but I can't find a first name.

Thanks for buying the book, Andy, and the more than welcome comments and additions.
The amateur sides in Bohemia were picked by the Amateur Football Association so the Sportsman's remark is somewhat true. I'll have a look at the reports again as I don't have Main in the squad unless he was a late addition. I've also noted the slightly different scorers for the 1901 match.

This will be the final edition that I will produce so I'll be issuing an addendum sheet that will be printable and easily slipped into the back cover. I'm afraid the cover design kept reverting to this format despite repeated attempts to rectify it and I hoped the relatively narrow white band doesn't detract it too much from the overall design. The blurry pics were a mixture of web grabs as well as scans from contributors. Unfortunately resizing some of them didn't work as well as I thought it would but again hope these relatively few mishaps don't ruin anyone's enjoyment of what is essentially a reference work.

John Treleven has also sent me some referees. One of the mishaps of publishing a book...

Referees
14.08.51 P.T.Power (York, Yorks)
18.05.52 E.Steiner (Vienna, AUT)
10.11.53 R.J.Burgess (Reading, Berks)
13.12.56 R.H.Mann (Worcester, Worcs, ENG)
16.12.56 R.H.Mann (Worcester, Worcs, ENG)
16.03.57 A.Marchetti (Milan, ITA)
24.05.64 R.Righi (Milan, ITA)
13.05.70 K.Riegg (Augsburg, FRG)
16.02.72 F.Rion (Liege, BEL)
28.04.72 G.P.Owen (not Owens) (Beaumaris, Anglesey, WAL) (president of Bangor City)
06.06.73 L.Somlai (Budapest, HUN)
13.03.74 H.Pijper (Vlaardingen, NED)

All addendums are very much appreciated

I've read the text again, and I mis-transcribed the scorers as that Gothic script is a challenge! By comparing with other sources, it looks like Belka, Jenik and Maly - but not an own goal by him as his shot was deflected by an English back for an own goal.

Excellent book. Heartiest congratulations to all involved & I agree - what value for £10. I got George Campbell`s orginal when first published but mislaid it years ago so this book very well received.
