DUNBLANE ROVERS

Post by LEATHERSTOCKING » Sat Jun 06, 2020 9:49 am

On 26th April 1927, Queen`s Park played a charity game against Dunblane Rovers @ Duckburn Park(3-3 draw) for the Victoria Hall fund. Does anyone have both teams and scorers?

There were small reports in the Courier and the Scotsman on Thursday 28 April but neither listed the teams. The Courier's read:

"Queen's Park visited Dunblane on Tuesday evening and played the local junior combination, Dunblane Rovers. The famous amateurs, who had out six of their first team, were given a hearty welcome by a crowd numbering 2,000.
Queen's Park scored first through Duguid (centre), Fitzpatrick equalising with a rocket shot. A minute before the interval Queen's took the lead, Duguid again being the marksman, and Gillespie added a third. Then Fitzpatrick scored again and in the last minute Penman got the equaliser".

There was nothing more in the Scotsman, which confirms the scorers.

Gordon,
Aye, most frustrating - that`s as far as I`ve got too. The Falkirk Herald`s no help. With all QP records pre 1945 up in flames & Dunblane Rovers disappearing just after the War, I think the chances of finding out any more is virtually nil.

The Dunblane Rovers minute books are in Stirling Council archives: http://www.stirlingarchives.scot/2017/1 ... 1921-1934/

The minutes will almost certainly list the Dunblane team, but I guess you will need to consult the Stirling Observer for the match report and the QP eleven. Bound copies are also held at Stirling Council archives. They are very helpful and might look it up for you when they are back to work after the lockdown.

Queen's Park had strong connections to Dunblane, and I have checked my history of Dunblane FC ( http://www.scottishsporthistory.com/his ... -club.html ). There were 11 players who played for both clubs, and 22 matches between the clubs from 1884 to 1913, albeit many of them were against the Strollers or even the Hampden XI.

Bit of a long shot but what about Strathearn Herald which was Crieff based?

Thank you chaps. I`ll get in touch with the Stirling Observer. The Strathearn paper(good call, Gogsy) HAS a brief report of the game giving the reason for the game, the score and an approximate attendance. I did a brief swatch @ Frank McCrossan`s webpage and the only game Dunblane played against QP`s 1st Xl was on 23/2/1888, the rest were, as you say Andy, all vs. the Strollers or Hampden Xl.

I think these are also first team friendlies:

23 Jan 1897, QP 4 Dunblane 0
26 April 1902, Dunblane 2 QP 1

and possibly
13 May 1899, Dunblane 2 QP 2

Andy,
Thank you for that. I`m compiling a list of Queen`s friendlies after a desultory fashion ie. while searching for various other things, I note down any I find en route eg. games against Northern Nomads, Dunblane Rovers etc.
