This team won 3-1 against South Africa at Telford Street, Inverness on Saturday 17th September 1953 before 7,500-8,000 spectators:
Bruce (Caledonian), Marnoch (Elgin), Wheeler (Clachnacuddin), Lytham (Thistle), McLean (Clachnacuddin - captain), Munro (Forres), Gauld (Elgin), Mackenzie (Thistle), Mitchell (Thistle), Mackenzie (Caledonian), Logie (Elgin)
On the following Wednesday the South Africans lost 3-1 at Dundee. It was part of their 11-week tour of Britain, Ireland, Netherlands and Portugal.
Obvious question is why their opponents weren't "Highland League XI".
That aside: are there other instances of SFA fielding regional XIs v opposition?
Scottish FA Northern XI
Re: Scottish FA Northern XI
It was a North of Scotland FA Select they were playing, not a Highland League Select.
The Aberdeenshire FA appear to have played far fewer Select team games against touring sides.
Highland League Select games have been few and far between.
