The match was Irish League 0, Southern League 2 (Fleming 2) on 30 September 1911 at Windsor Park, Belfast, attendance 9,000.

LH Skene of Glentoran played in goal for the Irish League.

A wee visit to Forfar Library on Saturday I found this gem from "The Forfar Review & Strathmore Advertiser" on Tuesday 22nd December 1914 both C Craigie (Forfar Athletic) & Clyde Skene (Montrose) were reinstated as amateurs at the Scottish Council meeting. It was reported Clyde Skene had already joined the army.

During the 1910/11 season Dunfermline Athletic had a goalkeeper named Skene playing for them, according to one local newspaper his first name was Ralph and was also related to Leslie Skene.

new name to me, but he might not have been from the Falkirk area, will check the cricket matches again [all the Skene's seemed to play cricket too, sometimes for Stenhousemuir CC sometimes for the asylum]

Sorry if that was an obscure aside, Leslie & Clydsdale's father was in charge of the stirlingshire asylum in larbert.

Out of interest I recently came across a 'Skene' in goal for Falkirk Amateurs v Paisley Academicals, Friendly at Comely Park, Falkirk on the 5th of February 1898. If this is Leslie then it shows he played 'senior' football before going off to University [unless he went to Uni before he was sixteen]. Can't say if it was his debut, as this was Falkirk Ams' first full season, their match reports were patchy.

Just a bit more on Ralph Skene. Courier of 20th March 1934 reports his death stating his clubs were Cupar Hearts, Kirkcaldy United, Dunfermline Ath, Raith Rovers and Kirkcaldy United again. (Although the Cupar team seems to have actually been either Cupar violet as reported when he signed for Dunfemline Ath or Cupar FC as reported when he signed for Kirkcaldy United in Aug 1909) He seems to have been a referee as well , officiating at Kirkcaldy schoolboys v Dunfermline schoolboys match 9th May 1928. Seems to have been President of Kirkcaldy Amateur league until he resigned in April 1929.

Going back to the 1908 Celtic vs. Clyde Glasgow Merchants Cup game, John Dickie @ outside right played for Rangers in 1907-08 season and for Clyde in 1908-09 and as this game was on 9/5/08, I don`t know whether he`d actually been transferred from Ibrox to Shawfield. Quite often clubs used the Charity Cup to try out free agents. Incidentally, Celtic also played an "outsider" that afternoon - Munro @ outside right was a Forres Mechanics player.
