A question for Morton lovers

Post by Carlucci » Thu Jun 16, 2005 12:00 pm

My Name is Carlos Flores García. I send you this
e-mail from Córdoba, in Spain. I'd like to know
some details about the following Scottish Cup
Finals, 1922 and 1948, and about 1964 Scottish
League Cup Final, all of them played by Morton.
Could you send me the line-ups, who were the
scorers, the exact goalscoring sequence, who were
the referees, and who were the managers in charge
of Morton in all those matches?.
In 1948-49 Morton were relegated from the first level, but all their home games were played away. ¿Why and where they played?
Thank you a lot for your kindness and your information.

Warmest Regards,

The Morton team in the League Cup Final on October 26th 1963 was Brown, Boyd, Mallan, Reilly,Kiernan, Strachan, Adamson, Campbell, Stevenson, McGraw and Wilson. The 'Ton lost 5-0 after it being 0-0 st half time.

Jim Forrest scored for Rangers after 52 and 59 minutes. Alex Willoughby scored in 65. Forrest scored two more in 88 and 89 so it wasn't nearly as bad as the score suggests.

The referee was Hugh Phillips of Wishaw. Hal Stewart was the Director/Manager of Morton. Don't know if it was in the match reports here or not but Robert Cochran managed the 1922 team. Don't know who the 1948 manager was, sorry

Carlucci,

I asked my colleague Forrest Robertson about Morton playing elsewhere in 1948-49 and he confirmed my suspicion that it was due to the state of the Cappielow pitch which (and I defy any Morton fans to contradict this) has always been one of the worst in Scotland.

Forrest also told me that it wasn't for the entire season. He said "It had been a notoriously soggy field for a number of years but things came to a head in the Scottish Cup 1st Round replay there vs. Inverness Caledonian on 26th January when the pitch became so churned up that it was virtually unplayable. They played their remaining eight league games @ Love Street & Somerset Park."

He also informs me that he thinks the Morton manager for the 1948 Scottish Cup Final was Jimmy Davies.
