John, James & Abraham. Meaney playing careers

Post by smokiesnwine » Mon Sep 21, 2009 10:23 pm

I have been sent a couple of photos from the granddaughter of Abraham Meaney who is looking for some information on his along with his brothers John and James playing career. The photo's are of Johns time i think with Partick Thistle and Falkirk and can be seen here http://www.hibsstats.co.uk/.

I know John was at Hibs from December 1916 until 1919. From the Litster discs He also played for Leith Athletic in the 1908/09 - 1911/12 seasons and from 1912/13 to 1914/15 he moved between Leith and Falkirk on several occassions. The disc also has John at Falkirk until December 1916 before signing for Hibs while Lugtons book has him signing from Cowdenbeath. Does anyone know which one he signed from? His brothers were also at Hibs where i think their appearances were limited to reserve and junior football. I would be grateful for any further information that could be provided with regards to the three brothers.

I've got John Meaney scoring 10 league goals for Hibs.

Acccording to Emms:

He made 7 league appearances in 1916/17, 29 in 1917/18 and 3 in 1918/1919 - I don't know what further details it might have on where else he played as I don't have it to hand, I'll check tonight.

I don't have my records to hand at the moment, but I don't recognise the name as being a Partick Thistle player or secretary. Indeed I don't recognise any of the named players as being Thistle players and I haven't seen the photo before either.

Its entirely possible that a dark jersey with a Thistle badge could have been used by many teams?

I'll check further this evening.

No players with the names noted on the caption played for Partick Thistle, with the exception of J.Stevenson, who was a forward around 1912-14, not a goalie as in the photo.

It could be a reserve team, but if your suggestion is that it's Thistle because of the badge on the shirt, I'm not entirely sure its a Thistle badge.

Thanks for the info guys.

I was assuming it was Partick Thistle because of the thistle on the jersey. However from your information and other info i received it is probably a picture of a minor team(possibly Portobello Thistle or Bo'ness) and not a league team as i first thought.

When Falkirk signed him from Leith Ath the 'Falkirk Herald' said he was an “Irishman”, I don't know if this was literal or not, if anyone could help clear up his biographical details it would be greatly appreciated.

A friend passed this on to me

From the Stirling Sentinel 29th Apr 1913

"Meaney, late of Leith, and now a "Bairn" of Falkirk is eligible to play for Ireland. He was born there, and has played in a trial game. Now that he is more "in the limelight," a cap may come his way."

I found a note of his transfer to Hibs from Clydebank in a contemporary edition of the Glasgow Herald. I think he played for them in the 2nd division in 1914-5

If anyone can confirm his place & date of birth (and presumably by now, his demise) I'd be grateful for the information

Hi folks. Sorry to resurrect this after such a long time, but I think I'm related to this family too.
John, James and Abraham (known as Abie?) - if I'm right then there were 13 children in total, and I think they moved to Leith from Ireland some time before 1897. I think their brother, William, was my grandfather.
Any information anyone has would be gratefully received as my mum remembers her Uncle Johnny well and it would be good to put something together for her. I'm willing to share what I know too. And anything on any other footballers in the family!

Don't know whether this helps:

On 5 January 1910 in Belfast a Meaney played in an Irish trial match Home Irish 3 Anglo Irish 1. The Anglo Irish team consisted of seven players with Scottish clubs and four with English clubs. Meaney scored the Anglo Irish goal just before half-time.
