Paul Smith, who along with his wife Shirley, writes 'The Ultimate Directory of English and Scottish Football League Grounds' tells me "We have been conducting a great deal of energy into trying to pinpoint the exact location of Helensburgh FCs Ardencaple Park and, thanks to local historians and very elderly eye witnesses, we managed to achieve this just prior to Christmas. However, during our investigations, we turned up a higher gate here than the 1,500 that both you and we have stated. Apparently the record attendance at Ardencaple Park is the 2,000 that watched the Scottish FA Qualifying Cup 1st Round tie v. Royal Albert (1-1) on September 5th, 1925. This was gleaned from contemporary local press accounts."

I quoted 1,500 for Helensburgh's Scottish Cup 1st round replay v Bo'ness on Jan 28th 1925 as the record. The edition I have of Paul & Shirley's book doesn't give a record for Ardencaple Park.

Upon re-checking and cross-checking I find that I have a figure of 2,500 for the Bo'ness match.

I suppose this is one of these cases where the true figure is highly unlikely ever to be known.

I'm sure you know this already but Tynecastle capacity was reduced last summer to 17,402 to make it UEFA Cup friendly. The largest crowd this season was against Rangers in September and numbered 17,379.

Gretna's crowd against Raith Rovers last Saturday was given as 2,201 which constitutes a new Scottish League record for Raydale Park.

Elgin – 4,962 / 1,552 v Hamilton (Div 3), 5 Aug 2000

What is the story there? Is it case of wishfull thinking by the club?

That was their first ever game in the Scottish League so 1,552 isn't really surprising.

Just a few other updates/amendments:

Pittodrie - 20,465; Scotland v Nigeria (Friendly), 17 Apr 2002

Clyde - 7,591 v Manchester United (Friendly), 16 Jul 2005; the official attendance vs Celtic (SC 2006) was 2 below that...

Gretna - 2,850 v StMirren (SC), 25 Feb 2006

Hamilton - 4,486 v Dundee (SC), 25 Feb 2006

Hearts - Capacity according to Rothman's: 17,412

St Johnstone - Should read 10,575, instead of 10,545

The 3,000 for Gretna v Dundee United remains the official record - no matter how unbelievable we may find it that's what they submitted to the SFA and that's what's in their records.

So this is "vis major" ;-). BTW, I am not so sure, how reliable the 2,850 for the St Mirren game are...

Because they apparently will get a new ground, the fictitious 3,000 should be bettered soon, anyway.

Newspaper reports recently suggest the denizens of Coatbridge have suddenly taken a fresh interest in their local club with printed attendances jumping to around the 800 mark. Jings.

The first time this happened there was no Celtic match that weekend so I assumed that was where the extra fans came from but then it happened again. Maybe they are letting kids in for free and adding them to the total?

Peterhead's record should be updated. The 2,717 for the play-off v Morton is a new ground (but not club) record.

Matt, in particular, should be aware that Peterhead's record was apparently broken again on Sunday when a crowd of 3,700 was given for their play-off v Partick Thistle.

I have no idea whether a temporary stand was in place. I imagine so as Balmoor as it is cannot hold that many spectators.

Thanks David.

This is from the Peterhead forum of 10 May:

"JJ's boys have been in over the last couple of days constructing some kind of temporary single tier platform at both (I think) ends. This is a fairly good response from the board to the "I can't see" crew at fairly short notice. This will not satisfy the displaced 'main stand' punters but I am sure that the club will endeavor to get their situation sorted ASAP.

If PFC achieve success in the next 2 games consideration will be given to the possibility of regular larger crowds and appropriate measures will be taken to accommodate. The club, given the 2005 – 2006 home gates, can’t possibly be expected to cater properly for crowds of 3000 – 4000.

If promotion does happen then yes we can, hopefully expect bigger home crowds and better viewing facilities and arrangements."

--> I think we cannot but accept the 3,700 although this number yet again seems to be "suspicious" (similar category as Gretna's 3,000 v Dundee Utd)...

Excellent work, Matt. And I'm impressed that you can get Rothmans/Sky delivered in Switzerland so early. I'm less than impressed by Amazon in getting my copy to me some three hours after your post and two days after other site members received it.
