Hi there and welcome to the forum. As you say your great uncle played in the 1938 Scottish Cup winning team. He was the left-back in that side and in the quarter-final replay v Raith Rovers at Stark's Park, it was his deflection which beat his own keeper to level the tie at 2-2 before East Fife won through with a late penalty.

He joined East Fife in 1936 and remained on the books until 1946 except for a spell spent on loan at Falkirk in 1940-41. Unfortunately pre-war Second Division and wartime records aren't as readily accessible as top flight and post-war ones so I can't say how many games he played.

He doesn't appear to have played at senior level after WW2 but, despite the presence of several lower league teams in the final in recent years, he remains part of the only league team outside the top division to win the Scottish Cup.

I have a record of a Robert Tait playing a single game for Hibs in 1943, but at inside forward. I suspect my hand written notes from the library would confirm it is the same player: http://www.ihibs.co.uk/game.php?gameid=1904

Just the one match for FFC that I can find!

Robert Tait

Debut – Saturday August 24th 1940 v Clyde (H) Southern League
Positions – Right-Back
Southern League Matches/Goals [1/-]

could check the reserves [if they played that season, memory is fuzzy]

found this on the East Fife Website

"Left Back was filled by Bobby Tait who came from Glasgow. Bobby first played for the Club on 29th August 1936. He previously played for Dumbarton and Ards(Irish League). His debut was against King's Park at home and The Fife won 3-0. Bobby's appearances were again limited to 57 league and 11 Scottish Cup. Bobby's last game was against Alloa Athletic in the league on 15th April 1939 when we won 4-1."

You could ask these chaps for more info http://www.aftn.co.uk/, http://corstorphine.tripod.com/historian.html I presume they know more East Fifery than I.

I knew his son also named Robert. He lived in Heywood Lancs in the 80's. I taught Bob's daughter(Robert Tait's) granddaughter)for several years. I haven't seen him since the 90's as I moved away. Hope this may help.

Re posting of 8th September 2010, Whiteinch was in Partick Burgh in 1910. Partick wasn`t absorbed into Glasgow until 1912.

Bobby Tait signed for East Fife on 5th August 1936 and left to join Falkirk on loan on 21st August 1940.
He made 57 league and 11 Scottish Cup appearances during his time at Bayview. The only game he missed in the 1937-38 cup winning run was the first round tie at Airdrieonians...
